Twenty-three years ago on July 1, 2001, FSI began with a Nissan pickup and a Jeep Cherokee, delivering small parts to various manufacturers along the river. I had just taken early retirement from the paper mill when Champion was bought out by International Paper. I cold called all the industrial suppliers in the area, dropped off our brochures, and mailed a zillion postcards to all the buyers for the manufacturing plants in North Alabama. We would either make it, or not. If not, I would have to get another job, so, I gave it all I had to succeed. My late husband, Jim, and I trudged on and after a couple of months, we could see it picking up. One day, we were asked to pick up 3 - 20' sticks of pipe. We didn't have a trailer yet, but we came up with a plan and fulfilled the job. We had a boat at the Brickyard Marina and we had a boat trailer for that 24' boat. We pulled it out, and picked up the pipe, 3 - 20' sticks of 6" SS - Sch40 pipe to #34 PM at IP. As we drove down that narrow road between the paper machines pulling a boat trailer with the pipe in the "V"...... I heard, "Hey, Barb, where's the boat?" I just smiled, and we got the job done.
Then one day.....all the hospitals started calling, an avenue we had not thought of pursuing, and suddenly, we were also in the medical courier business as well. That was a God-send, and helped us bridge the gap until industrial jobs took hold and we were steady. We still do Medical, but 95% of what we do is industrial. Within 4 months, we had to buy a bigger truck, then a trailer, then a larger truck and gooseneck trailer, a cargo van for awhile, and even a little hatchback Ford that we used for very small things, and that car ran over 350,000 miles! Our prize truck of all time, was an F250 Diesel with a 7.3 powerstroke engine that they quit making. Jamey was driving it when that truck rolled past 500,000 miles at the top of Chapman Mtn. in Huntsville many years ago. Best truck we ever had. We really put the miles on our trucks and they wear out quickly in our business, so we are consistently replacing them as the miles stack up on them. Our trucks have to be in great shape because we are on a mission every day to expediently pick up and deliver for our customers. We have probably bought and sold over 25 trucks in the last 23 years and we have had couriers who were retired from their careers, work with us many more years after, and finally retire again with us. We have had some of the best couriers working with us over the last 23 years. Some have passed on, and it saddens me to think about them and how special they were to us. We have been around awhile. Thank you to our many customers that have been with us our entire journey. We are a company with work ethic. We do everything in our power to accommodate our customers so they are satisfied. We not only want to meet their expectations, but we aim to exceed them. And thank you to our fine couriers, Mike Kirby, David Bolding, Virginia Byrd, Charles Teague, & Hank Kimbrell. We couldn't do what we do without you.
