Born April 13, 1969, today we honor RIVA RIDGE.
This striking light bay stood 16hh. He was “the horse that saved Meadow Stable.” Christopher Chenery was sick around this time and the Chenery family was faced with the fact that it made financial sense to sell the farm. Penny never wanted to sell, and once Riva Ridge started running, the stables finances took better shape. Many believe that Secretariat saved Meadow Stable, when in fact it was Riva Ridge. Penny was always disappointed that the Secretariat movie didn’t give more credit to him.
One of the greatest horses of his decade, he was always overshadowed by his stablemate, Secretariat and other greats of the 1970s. He won 17/30 starts, including the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.
Penny Chenery once said (of her visits to Claiborne), “As time passed I’d call to Secretariat and he wouldn’t acknowledge me. I was just one of a hundred people calling his name every day. But right up until he died, Riva Ridge would perk up when he heard me call him. That’s why when I talk about the two horses, I say Secretariat belonged to the people and Riva Ridge belonged to me. Secretariat had millions of people who cared about him. He didn’t need me. But Riva Ridge only had me. He was my hero and I knew I meant something to him.”
He was named for Penny’s favorite ski run in Vail, Colorado.
