The 39th annual North American Railcar Mechanical Operations (NARMO) Seminar is a premier educational and training program sponsored by the Association of American Railroads' Safety and Operations Department. Building Future Engineers and First Responders, One Club at a Time! 👧👦🙏
Recently, MxV Rail and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pueblo County partnered for Engineering Mentorship Days to give local youth a firsthand look at exciting careers in STEM, emergency response, and rail transportation.
MxV Rail engineers visited the Pueblo Academy of the Arts (PAA), Avondale, and Eastside Clubs to share what they do, showcase innovative projects, and guide students through hands-on STEM activities. But the learning didn't stop there! Students from the PAA Club and Liberty Point International (LPI) Clubs also visited the MxV Rail site to experience the Security and Emergency Response Training Center (SERTC), our world-renowned hazmat training facility, in action.
The youngsters got an up close and personal look at a full-scale train derailment scenario and toured the SERTC campus where our instructors demonstrated the skills and techniques they teach to emergency responders from around the world.
Both MxV Rail and SERTC are proud to inspire the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders through hands-on learning and community partnerships.

🚆 Meet Dan Hawken, MxV Rail's Supervisor of Track Maintenance

Dan has been on the team for nearly a year, bringing more that two decades of railroad experience to MxV Rail/SERTC, overseeing track maintenance operations, and supporting critical testing and evaluation efforts that help keep our test center safe and ready for research.

What keeps Dan excited? Innovation. He especially enjoys seeing the latest tie technologies, products, and vehicle/track interface technologies being tested in real-world conditions—from broken rail and broken wheel detection systems to new materials and designs that could shape the future of the industry.

After 20 years with the railroad, Dan says one of the best parts of his role is getting a behind-the-scenes look at how new ideas are tested before they make their way into the field.

When he’s not at MxV Rail, you’ll likely find Dan off-roading in the mountains, building Jeeps and trucks, enjoying shooting sports, or cheering on the Colorado Avalanche. At home, he and his wife are kept company by their two German Shepherds, Bruce and Sydney, and two cats, Helen and Sabrina. 🐕🐕🐈🐈

Dan also credits his wife for her unwavering support through the twists and turns of his railroad career. ❤️

We're looking for an experienced, team-oriented Locomotive Engineer who is ready for a change of pace. In this role, based at our Pueblo, Colorado research facilities, you will:
▫️Operate locomotives, train consists, and rail-mounted equipment safely and effectively during test programs.
▫️ Use your technical expertise to communicate operational matters clearly with customers and internal teams.
▫️ Collaborate with test personnel throughout the planning, ex*****on, and completion of test programs.
▫️ Provide logistics and operational support for assigned test programs.
▫️ Conduct daily locomotive and equipment inspections and safely start and operate equipment as required.

There's still time to catch the August issue of RT&S featuring a study by MxV Rail and Texas A&M University on track parameters that affect track buckle strength.

The findings showed that having a model that details how varying track component types and conditions affect track buckle strength (TBS) allows for a better understanding of how modifications to the track structure can affect TBS and identify stronger or weaker locations.
