🗺️ STATE SPOTLIGHT: MISSISSIPPI

If you're hauling through Mississippi, there's a major infrastructure project worth keeping on your radar.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation is launching the I-20/I-55 Freight Corridors Improvement Project, known as “The Big Fix.”

The project includes:

🚧 36 bridges being rehabilitated or modernized
🛣️ 32 miles of interstate resurfacing or repairs
📡 New Intelligent Transportation System technology
🚦 Smart Work Zone improvements
🛤️ Work on I-20, I-55, I-220 and U.S. 51

The project is expected to last approximately 2½ years, with two major planned full I-20 shutdowns in future summers.

For drivers, that means construction awareness and route planning will matter.

🚛❓ TRUCKING FAQ: “DO I STILL NEED TO KEEP A PAPER MEDICAL CARD?”
This is a question we're hearing more as states transition to FMCSA's National Registry II (NRII).
The short answer: Don't assume your paper card tells the whole story.
Under the new electronic process, medical exam results are transmitted electronically from the certified medical examiner through FMCSA to the driver's state licensing agency.
For carriers, that means it's important to make sure the driver's CDLIS/MVR reflects the correct medical certification status and expiration date. FMCSA says motor carriers must obtain the CDLIS driver MVR with medical certification information and retain it in the driver's qualification file.
And right now, there are still two states—Alaska and Louisiana—that have not implemented NRII.
📋 TCP Compliance Tip: Don't wait until a driver's medical certification becomes a problem. Keep your driver files organized and check expiration dates ahead of time.

Only 2 states remain out of compliance with CDL medical-card electronic reporting
A new article published today by Commercial Carrier Journal reports that Alaska and Louisiana are now the only two states that have not implemented the FMCSA's National Registry II (NRII) electronic medical-certification system. Under NRII, certified medical examiners electronically transmit physical-exam results to FMCSA, which then sends the information to state licensing agencies.

FMCSA's current temporary exemption allowing certain drivers and carriers to rely on a paper Medical Examiner's Certificate runs through October 11, 2026, and FMCSA has said it does not expect another nationwide exemption after that date.

Why it matters: This is especially important for carriers managing driver qualification files. Medical certification is moving further away from a paper-based process, so carriers should make sure their drivers' CDLIS records accurately reflect their current medical status rather than assuming the paper card alone is sufficient

One simple organization trick: create a dedicated digital folder for important trucking documents.
Consider organizing copies of things like:
• Registration
• Insurance documents
• Permits
• Receipts
• IFTA records
• Maintenance records
The goal isn't to replace documents you are legally required to carry—it’s to make important information easier to find when you need it.

Aurora targets 200 driverless trucks by year-end
Aurora Innovation says it remains on track to have at least 200 driverless Class 8 trucks operating commercially on public roads by the end of 2026, with that capacity already committed to customers. The company currently has 10 approved driverless routes and 12 active routes, with expansion planned across the U.S. Sun Belt. �

Why it matters: Autonomous trucking is moving from pilot projects toward larger-scale commercial operations. That doesn't mean traditional trucking is disappearing—it means technology, fleet operations, driver roles, maintenance, insurance, routing, and freight economics could continue changing. For carriers and owner-operators, it's worth watching how autonomous technology develops and where it may complement or compete with conventional operations.
