Japan is an incredible destination, but there are a few cultural customs that may be different from what you're used to at home.
🗑️ Don't expect trash cans everywhere. Public trash cans can be difficult to find, so carry a small bag with you for your trash until you find somewhere to dispose of it.
🍜 Avoid eating while walking. While you may see food stalls and convenience stores everywhere, it's generally more respectful to stop and eat rather than walk around while eating.
🚕 Don't open the taxi door yourself. Japanese taxis have automatic doors, so let the driver handle it for you!
🚆 Keep your voice down on trains. Public transportation is generally quiet, and phone conversations are discouraged. Keep conversations at a respectful volume.
📱 Don't take phone calls on public transportation. If you need to make or answer a call, it's best to step off the train.
💴 Cash is still useful. While credit cards and mobile payments are widely accepted, you'll still encounter places where cash is preferred or necessary.
🙏 Be mindful of temple and shrine etiquette. These are places of worship, so dress respectfully, keep noise to a minimum, and pay attention to posted instructions before entering or taking photos.
🚉 Be prepared for lots of walking—and stairs! Even with Japan's incredible train system, you'll likely cover a LOT of ground on foot. Comfortable shoes are a must!
🧍♀️ Follow the local flow. Whether you're navigating a busy train station, escalator, or sidewalk, pay attention to what everyone else is doing. Japan has a wonderful sense of order, and following the crowd makes getting around much easier.
✨ Be observant. When you're unsure what to do, take a moment to look around. Chances are, you'll quickly see what the locals are doing.
