E P H E S U S

The ruins of this ancient port city reflect centuries of history from classical Greece to the Roman Empire to the spread of Christianity. They are some of the best preserved in the world, meaning we get to walk on the same paved streets that the classic Greeks once did.

G A L E R I E I K M A N

Even though we decided not to pick up a Turkish rug on this trip, we did splurge on taking photos inside this insta-famous rug shop!

Here are a few things we learned if you’re looking to do the same, “save” for future trip planning ⤵️

💰This shop in particular charged 1600TL per group for 30 minutes inside the shop with “professional” camera gear (> iPhone). Thankfully we were able to split the cost with friends 😮‍💨

🕒 Those 30 minutes go FAST, so arrive with a plan and list of shots

🅿️ Parking in Göreme center is not free. Once you park, an attendant in a vest will collect the parking fee from you

Much of Cappadocia’s landscape is made up of soft sandstone, which made it easy for residents of ancient settlements to carve out large caves to use as homes.

Some groups of these dwellings are now housed within open air museums. Others have been turned into hotels visitors can stay in during their visit. But our favorites were those you could find and explore in the area’s numerous valleys.

We woke up our first morning in Cappadocia to the reason we all go: the balloons! We sat with the van’s doors open, looking out at Love Valley as the balloons floated all around us.

Also famous for its cave dwellings, fairy chimneys, and scenic valleys, Cappadocia sees nearly 100 hot air balloons fly almost every morning.

A foggy morning at Red Valley.

How our morning went:
1. Wake up at the crack of dawn in the freezing cold
2. Get dressed and drive to location to photograph sunrise
3. Arrive to find so much fog that you can’t even see said location
4. “I’ll edit that out in Lightroom” 🥲

P A M U K K A L E

Turkish for “cotton castle”, this site is known for its thermal waters flowing through white travertine terraces.

The reality today is that many of these pools are dry and those still containing water are further from the source, meaning they are much cooler in temperature. Still, we wouldn’t discourage anyone from visiting as it’s truly a marvel to see!

Here are a few things we learned during our visit, “save” for future trip planning ⤵️

▫️It probably goes without saying, but arrive early! Even at 07:30 we waited in a queue of tour buses to enter.

▫️Another perk to arriving early, you can view the hot air balloons that launch over Pamukkale most mornings and maybe even have them in the background of your photos.

▫️Your ticket also includes the ancient city of Hierapolis.

Another amazing stop from the start of our trip in Turkey. This church is carved into an outcropping of volcanic rock more than 1,000 years ago.
