Sunrise flights. A fast slice of refrigerated pizza from the evening before. Coffee black. Opening a hangar door to darkness. The smell of nine cylinders coming to life. The sound of a dozen wires singing between the wings. The first sliver of sun over the horizon. Radio off, wind through hair, stick in one hand, the other resting on the throttle. We bank, we climb, we twist and turn, a dance in the smooth air for someone not inclined to move a muscle with a tune on the ground. Flying. An obsession. A way of life. Freedom.
