Team KPOV took advantage of the runway closure due to construction by painting the “piano keys” 🎹, runway numbers , and center line. Doing the work “in-house” instead of contracting the job saved the airport over $20K. Kudos to Dan and Matt for tackling this important safety project.

Upcoming Temporary Runway Closure

Runway 9-27 at Portage County Regional Airport (POV) will be temporarily closed to accommodate construction activity where the taxiway work intersects the runway. We anticipate this closure starting at 6 am on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and running through 6 pm on Thursday, August 6, 2026. It is subject to change, so please check NOTAMS.

The contractor is making good progress reconstructing the north parallel taxiway. They have reached a phase that will require work within the runway safety area (RSA) and at the intersection of the taxiway and the runway. This work requires a temporary runway closure to maintain safety, ensure proper geometry and separation standards, and protect both construction personnel and aircraft operations. We anticipate this closure starting at 6 am on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and running through 6 pm on Thursday, August 6, 2026. It is subject to change, so please check NOTAMS.

This temporary closure is a necessary safety measure during the critical intersection phase of the Taxiway B reconstruction project—the first major capital project under direct Portage County sponsorship. The work improves long-term runway/taxiway separation, drainage, lighting, markings, and overall operational safety.

Less than a week of construction days so far and 90% of the old taxiway is removed, the wetlands removal is done and the cut for the new taxiway will likely be done by Friday. Mark Schaffer Excavating & Trucking, Inc. is doing a great job! Kudos to The Thrasher Group, Inc. Keep up the good work everyone.

Today, we started the long-needed and much-anticipated Taxiway Bravo reconstruction with an official ground-breaking ceremony. Turning over the first shovels of dirt to mark the start of the project were Portage County Commissioners Mike Tinlin, Sabrina Christian-Bennett, and Jill Crawford. They were joined by State Representative Heidi Workman, Airport Director Robert Hartigan, Nicole Price of The Thrasher Group, and Jason Schaffer from Mark Schaffer Excavating & Trucking. The project cost is pegged at $3,046,251, with 95% of the funding from the FAA and the remaining 5% from the ODOT Office of Aviation. This is the first major infrastructure project since the BOC became the airport's primary sponsor in 2024. This project will correct a taxiway geometry safety issue that does not comply with current FAA airport design standards, replace aging infrastructure, and set the airport up for future capital projects that will only serve to enhance economic development opportunities for the county and region.
