Reading Army Airfield (circa 1942) served as an Air Support Base providing maintenance, training, armament, storage, and military housing during World War II. One of its primary missions included aircraft upfit for deployment, including the B-24 Liberator.

Thousands of B-24 Liberator bombers transitioned through the airport throughout the war. According to base records, 318 Liberators were in storage at one time in 1944 (pictured in the aerial photo).

Recently, Reading Regional Airport changed its terminal address to 24 LIBERATOR WAY in commemoration of this heritage.

The B-24 “Diamond Lil” is scheduled to appear at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum WWII Weekend. Get your tickets for June 5–7, 2026!
