Before You Approve That Label Proof… Take Another Look!

It's exciting to get a new custom label ready for production—but don't let that excitement turn your proof approval into a quick glance and a click.

Before approving your proof, take a few minutes to check:

âś“ Is the label size correct? Try printing it at 100% and placing it on your actual product.

âś“ Have you checked every word and number? Look closely at spelling, part numbers, phone numbers, addresses and product information.

âś“ Are the logos and graphics correct and current?

âś“ Are the colors what you're expecting? Remember, colors viewed on a monitor may differ from the finished printed label.

âś“ Have you tested any barcodes or QR codes?

âś“ If the labels are machine applied, is the orientation and unwind direction correct?

âś“ Is the material and adhesive appropriate for where and how the label will be used?

Once a proof is approved, it's ready to move into production—so this is the time to catch anything that needs to be changed.

And if something doesn't look right? Ask us!

We'd much rather answer a question before your labels are printed than discover a problem afterward.

📢 U.S. DOT & IATA REGULATIONS ARE CHANGING

A reminder to our customers and distributors: Changes are coming to the U.S. DOT and IATA lithium battery mark requirements.

Beginning January 1, 2027, lithium battery marks will no longer be permitted to include the additional “For more information call:” phone number text at the bottom of the mark.

To prepare for this change, The De Leone Corporation is already transitioning to updated lithium battery marks without the phone number.

Our current HML-700 through HML-704 labels will be discontinued effective October 1, 2026. Updated versions are already available:

• IATA-803 – UN ______
• IATA-806 – UN3090
• IATA-807 – UN3091
• IATA-808 – UN3480
• IATA-809 – UN3481
• IATA-810 – UN3552
• IATA-811 – UN3551

Labels containing the phone number remain acceptable during the transition period through December 31, 2026, so existing inventory may continue to be used during that time.

We encourage customers to begin transitioning to the updated versions now to avoid inventory or compliance issues as we approach 2027.

ORM-D PHASE OUT
The De Leone Corporation will begin phasing out our stock of ORM-D labels on September 1st, 2020.
ORM-D labels ordered after September 1st, 2020 will NOT be eligible for return.

What are the new Limited Quantity requirements and what is happening to ORM-D?
On January 19, 2011, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) published final rule HM-215K in the Federal Register to harmonize the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) in 49 CFR with the United Nations (UN) requirements for transportation of dangerous goods. One of the changes calls for the elimination of the ORM-D exception for consumer commodity shipments. Per the revised rule, items previously marked as ORM-D will have to conform to the new requirements for Limited Quantity shipments or be shipped as fully regulated items. Although the term “ORM-D” is being eliminated, most consumer commodities will continue to be eligible for the limited quantity exception. The final rule also includes a new Limited Quantity marking that will replace the ORM-D on packages.

How long can I continue to use the ORM-D labels?
Voluntary compliance with the new regulation was authorized effective January 1, 2011, for domestic ground, rail and vessel shipments. The deadline for the ORM-D phase-out is December 31, 2020. Therefore, beginning January 1, 2021, ORM-D will no longer be an acceptable marking for shipping hazardous materials domestically.

Will the new Limited Quantity requirement be different than the current ORM-D requirement?
Packaging, labeling and marking requirements remain the same under the new Limited Quantity requirements as they did under ORM-D with one exception: instead of marking packages with ORM-D, the newly Limited Quantity marking must be used. In essence, limited quantities are now treated just like consumer commodities.

If you have questions regarding the use of ORM-D / Limited Quantity labels and their associated regulations, please contact the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) or the Department of Transportation.

Questions regarding the purchase of the Limited Quantity labels may be directed to The De Leone Corporation Customer Service Team: 541-504-8311 or [email protected].
