King County Metro’s Community Van is an affordable shared-ride program driven by volunteers and operated by Hopelink in Redmond, Sammamish, Shoreline, the Snoqualmie Valley, and Tukwila. The Community Van Team (and Rucky the Seattle Seawolves Rugby team mascot) were in Tukwila last Saturday at the Touch a Truck event. Kids enjoyed the wheelchair ramp access in the van. Did you know that our 6-person vans are wheelchair compliant? It was great to connect with the attendees and introduce the Community Van program. Tukwila Touch-A-Truck is an annual family-friendly community event where residents can explore local service vehicles and learn about community resources.

Hopelink Community Van Story: Mobility, Access & Time Together. Here’s what one Community Van rider shared: "We cannot afford a wheelchair van right now, so Community Van is the only way our adult son can reach many places in his power wheelchair. The program makes a tremendous difference in his ability to get to medical appointments and participate in occasional activities with the family."

Community Van is a volunteer-driven transportation program that helps people get where they need to go.

Becoming a volunteer driver is as easy as 1-2-3!

Step 1: Submit an Online Driver Application
Complete the online application. Most applications are processed and approved within 1–2 weeks.
Step 2: Attend a 45-Minute In-Person Van Training
Learn how to access the van and lockboxes, secure a wheelchair, complete a trip log, and become familiar with the vehicle.
Step 3: Complete a One-Hour Online Orientation
Take the self-paced online orientation covering driver safety, program guidelines, and best practices.
Final Step: You're Approved to Drive!

Once approved, you can borrow a Community Van and provide rides for your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and other members of your community. Community Vans can be used for trips anywhere within approximately a two-hour driving distance. As a volunteer driver, you ride for free. Riders pay regular public transit fares, and youth ride free. We cover the cost of gas, tolls, maintenance, and insurance—so you can focus on helping your community get where they need to go.
