Remembering Medal of Honor Hero: 2nd Lt. Pete Hughes

On August 1, 1943, during the daring low-level raid on Axis power oil refineries, 22-year-old B-24 pilot Pete Hughes’ plane was hit hard.

Fuel poured from major leaks, turning it into a flying bomb.He could have landed safely. Instead, Hughes flew straight into the blazing inferno at 30 feet, dropped his bombs on target with precision, and tried to save his crew before the plane crashed.

For his supreme courage and sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

A Texas A&M man from Refugio, Texas Pete Hughes gave everything for the mission.

In 2 weeks our friends across the bay at Wings over Rockport is hosting a Biplanes and Breakfast!

Its a really great cause and we fully support all the amazing opportunities they are giving to students, veterans and the public.

Y'all head out to RPK on May 23rd fly in a classic biplane, grab some pancakes and coffee with great people, and support this amazing cause.

🌞 Big Sunday welcome to our friends at Stryker Electric LLC! ✈️

They flew in bright and early this morning to work with the new Refugio water tower!

Fun Fact: Water towers have served as classic navigational aids for smaller planes flying under Visual Flight Rules (VFR).

Are y'all ready for Wings Over South Texas Air Show at NAS Kingsville this weekend cause we definitely are!

The Blue Angels will be performing along with many others!

Also our friends at Vintage Air Tours will be there with "Betty" a 1943 PT-17 Stearman biplane.

All of us in Refugio Co are incredibly happy for Vintage Air Tours being able to participate in Wings Over South Texas Air Show !

Just slip Betty on the line with the Blue Angels no one will notice. ✈️ 😂

One week out from Wings Over South Texas — and we can't wait to bring "Betty" to Kingsville!

For those who haven't met her yet: Betty is our 1940s WWII Stearman biplane. She's an open-cockpit, radial-engine legend that has been thrilling pilots and passengers for generations. She doesn't just sit pretty on the flight line — she flies regularly over the South Texas coastline, carrying passengers who want an experience unlike anything else.

Come see her up close at the airshow April 18–19. Our team will be there to share her history and talk about what we do at Vintage Air Tours.
