And really…isn’t that what travel is supposed to be?
Some people fly to Europe.
My brother takes a different route...
He loads the family into the car and points it toward the opposite coast, New York, boards a ship bound for England…and lets the Atlantic do the rest...he returns home the same way.
No transatlantic flight required.
After repeating that a few times, I’m beginning to suspect avoiding the airplane was merely the excuse.

Southern Europe is terribly seductive on paper.
Then comes the early morning tour. The long day ashore. Dinner. Sleep. Repeat.
I know. I once sailed 25 days with only two sea days.
By our second visit to Kotor, we did something rather rebellious—we stopped.
An outdoor café. Granite cliffs overhead. A deep breath.
And four travelers agreeing, “We need to come back and stay awhile.”
Sometimes the best part of seeing everything is discovering where you’d rather linger.

The cobblestones of Dubrovnik. The scent of lemon trees in Amalfi. That third glass of wine in a Santorini taverna where time moves differently—slower, softer, as if the Southern Europe itself has decided you deserve one more hour.

The ship, of course, disagrees.

Set your reminders now. Before the ouzo, before the wander. Because "pier runners" make for excellent cruise ship theater, but you were meant to be sipping negronis on your balcony, not waving frantically from the dock as your stateroom sails toward Naples without you.
