You may have seen the news out of South Carolina this week. A woman who presented herself as a travel agent was arrested after allegedly taking a client’s money for flights that were never booked. Sheriff’s investigators say tips have since come in about possible victims in other states too.
Stories like this are hard to read, especially when someone saved up for a trip that meant something to them.
Here’s what I’d want every traveler to know before handing anyone a deposit:
You should be able to confirm your reservation directly with the airline, cruise line, or resort
Pay with a credit card whenever you can, so you have added protection
Ask how they’re affiliated and what credentials they hold
Meet them, even if it’s over video. A real advisor won’t mind you asking questions
