To all my fellow Veterans, this is huge! 8.7% COLA increase. This will increase for both those who receive a retirement pension and those receiving financial compensation for injuries incurred during service.

If you can and are younger like myself I would suggest turning that 8.7% into some sort of rainy day fund. This increase can be a few hundred dollars a month. If you are not scrapping by right now and have the means to reinvest this increase do so, or use it as a targeted payment play for reduce your debt. Reducing your overall debt can product long term savings which you can again reinvest into something else.

The term Gold Star family is a modern reference that comes from the Service Flag. These flags/banners were first flown by families during World War I. The flag included a blue star for every immediate family member serving in the armed forces of the United States, during any period of war or hostilities in which the armed forces of the United States were engaged. If that loved one died, the blue star was replaced by a gold star. This allowed members of the community to know the price that the family had paid in the cause of freedom.
The United States began observing Gold Star Mother's Day on the last Sunday of September, in 1936. The Gold Star Wives was formed before the end of World War II. The Gold Star Lapel Button was established in August 1947.
Today, the nation recognizes the sacrifice that all Gold Star Family members make when a father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, or other loved one dies in service to the nation. Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day is the last Sunday of September and Gold Star Spouses Day is April 5. The strength of our nation is our Army. The strength of our Army is our Soldiers. The strength of our Soldiers is our families. The Army recognizes that no one has given more for the nation than the families of the fallen.

Although there are memorials and references around the country I found this one specifically beautiful.

The OOIDA Call to Action Team has the following update.

On Monday, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California lifted the injunction that has prevented California from enforcing AB5 in the trucking industry. While this allows California to enforce the law, we do not expect the state will immediately move forward with a broad enforcement campaign, or possibly any enforcement at all for the time being. There are still many unanswered questions about how the law will apply, and neither OOIDA nor the state will have answers until they are litigated in specific cases.

OOIDA is continuing our legal challenge against AB5 and awaiting future court dates. In the meantime, the state will hold an AB5 trucking webinar on Tuesday, September 13 from 1pm-3pm Eastern time. On August 7, 1782, George Washington created three new military badges that would honor the service of ordinary, common soldiers. As Washington explained, his motives were to honor acts of bravery amongst his regular soldiers, because "The road to glory in a patriot army and a free country is thus open to all." In his General Orders of August 7, 1782, Washington outlined the creation of both Honorary Badges of Distinction and a Badge of Military Merit. The General Orders explained that "whenever any singularly meritorious action is performed, the author of it shall be permitted to wear on his facings over the left breast, the figure of a heart in purple cloth, or silk, edged with narrow lace or binding." Washington created the precedence for the eventual establishment of the Purple Heart, adopted by the army in 1932 at the behest of General Douglas MacArthur in conjunction with the two hundredth anniversary of Washington's birth.

There you have it, the reason why the Teamsters and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), want AB5 to be in place…. “AB5 would push companies to hire drivers as employees. Those company drivers could then join unions”

So the drivers can join unions and the Teamsters would get more union dues! It’s about the dues, not the driver pay or freight cost…

As our contract are currently with larger companies this worries us. The ABC test (section 2) is what really worries us.

It’s time to drill down, study the law, and like one of my old Commanders use to say “Find a Way to Win!”.

We operate under our own authority; maintain our own (HAZMAT Certified) insurance; do our own books; maintain hand written logs (ELDs not currently required for our type of trucking); rock cold calling to build a larger customer partnership…
