At Terra Renewal we collect liquid and semi-solid waste from a myriad of sources including, but not limited to - manufacturing facilities, restaurants, municipal treatment plants and drilling sites. To the majority of our customers the material is just that – waste that needs to be handled. However, nearly all the material we collect is rich with organic nutrients, and for more than a decade we have used several processes to take advantage of these nutrients. For example:
Land Application – Subsoil Injection
In this process we transport the organic material to farmland near the processing plant and incorporate it into the soil as rich fertilizer. This reduces a farmer’s need for manufactured synthetic fertilizer and keeps millions of tons of organic waste out of our landfills.
To accomplish this we partner with farmers and landowners to:
•Minimize the impact of application. We use state-of-the-art equipment with high-flotation tires for minimal soil compaction and disturbance.
•Minimize odor. We use specialized tractors to inject material several inches under the soil.
•Impact crops in a positive way. We understand soil conditions, crop considerations and weather, and we have the expertise to optimize the timing of each application.
•Develop nutrient management plans. These plans best support the soil conditions and farmers’ needs.
Land Application – Top-Spreading
Top-spreading material offers farmers and landowners similar benefits to subsoil injection. This method is typically used on pastureland where residuals are well-digested and there is little potential for odor problems. Much of the mud and cuttings collected from energy drilling sites are handled through top-spreading.
Both subsoil injection and top-spreading land application processes have sustainable agricultural benefits including better soil aeration, higher moisture content to root systems and increased field productivity and yield. Terra Renewal supports and complies with all local and state regulations and does what makes sense for customers and for landowners to create these sustainable benefits.
Dewatering
Dewatering is a process by which a significant portion of the moisture from residuals can be pressed out of the material. The remaining dry material can be disposed of in a variety of ways, and sometimes the resulting water can be flushed into municipal water systems. Dewatering is a viable option for some of our customers. We offer both stationary and portable dewatering presses.
Dewatering offers several economic and environmental advantages:
•Lower material transportation costs
•Lower landfill disposal costs
•Smaller footprint need for projects
•Removal of equipment following process
Re-use as Supplement or Fuel
We collect and transport used oil and cooking grease to our processing facilities where we process and purify it to produce yellow grease. Yellow grease has many “re-uses” including the production of animal feed, soaps, cosmetics, detergents and rubber tire compounds. Yellow grease can be processed and blended with diesel fuel to create bio-diesel which burns cleaner than regular diesel fuel.
