One bill halfway through the Mississippi statehouse is intended to deter the theft of truck, rail or container cargo through stiff punishment.

House lawmakers voted 111-1 to pass a bill that would establish cargo theft as a specific offense and impose felony charges with escalating fines and punishment based on the value of goods. HB1263, which mirrors a 2014 Georgia law, now moves to the Senate. - See more at: http://www.landlinemag.com/Story.aspx?StoryID=28519 #.VOZYFy5X-WU

2014 Year in Review Supply Chain ISAC Report of Cargo Theft Activity

In 2014, the SC-ISAC recorded 771 relevant incidents, down from 811 recorded in 2013. This analysis is the second straight year the number of incidents decreased since the SC-ISAC started collecting cargo theft information in 2005. Although total incidents were down, the fact that the last two quarters of the year had 454 incidents give us a pause when speaking of continued decreases.

The last remaining highway in America with metric markers may soon be updated with shiny, new mileage markers instead. The metric markers across a 63-mile stretch of I-19 in Arizona are a holdover from the Carter administration, when the federal government pushed for a nationwide conversion to the metric system.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is considering changing I-19's metric signs to the English system.

The long Thanksgiving holiday is upon us. Freight volumes are high for the Holiday Black Friday sales. While most of us will be enjoying the time off and spending it with our loved ones, cargo thieves are enjoying the time they will have to steal. Closed warehouses and unattended vehicles with assorted merchandise are key targets for thieves.
The holiday weekend will provide cargo thieves the prime chance to strike. To prepare for the long holiday weekend, we are urging the entire SC-ISAC member’s to discuss and review their security procedures and protocols. Below is a list of suggestions to help maintain the integrity of
Facilities:
• Check security alarm and surveillance systems to ensure proper working order
• Ensure batteries are fresh in exit doors and back up cellular phone (used to maintain alarm reporting, if phone lines are compromised)
• Perform perimeter checks, look at fencing or other types of barriers to ensure they are properly secured
• Check perimeter lighting to ensure lights are on and replace any non-working non fixtures. Review timer so that lights come on while facility is closed.
• Ensure company alarm call list is current and contains valid phone numbers. Require responsible persons to respond to all alarm calls, even when the system is suspected of malfunctioning
• Use a non-integrated alarm back up system with verified response capabilities
• Contact law enforcement and ask for additional patrols in the area
• Remove keys from all warehouse equipment (forklifts)and place in a secure location
Freight In-Transit:
• If you have to leave your rig or loaded trailer unattended, look for a secure lot or authorized location to leave vehicles
• If forced to leave vehicles at a public facility (truck stop, etc) pick one that is well lit and utilizes surveillance equipment. Park within view of the camera
• Secure the tractor and trailer with a steering wheel locking device, kingpin locks, glad-hand locks (or other security equipment). Put industrial strength padlocks on trailer doors
• Do NOT leave keys inside tractor
• Check on the unattended vehicles as frequently as possible
• Use covert cargo tracking system with geo-fencing and alert notification capabilities
• Notify dispatch of where and when you have dropped the load and estimated time of return
