We've been fighting phragmites for nearly two decades. Here's what we've learned.

Since phragmites was first recorded in Utah in 1993, and serious management efforts began in 2006, land managers, conservation partners, and vegetation specialists have been building a playbook for what works.

We've learned that no single method wins alone. We've learned that consistency across multiple seasons is non-negotiable. And we've learned that the programs making the most progress are the ones that combine science, coordination, and persistence.

We've had the privilege of hosting a few tours around the Great Salt Lake and nearby riparian areas, talking to businesses, non-profits, and officials about Phragmites and our work to remove it.

Our goal? Teach about large scale Phragmites treatments and how hydrology plays a role in herbicide treatment timing. Seeing these ecosystems in person highlights exactly why precision vegetation management is vital for the health of our surrounding wetlands, especially the Great Salt Lake.

We’re looking forward to sharing more behind-the-scenes insights soon. Stay tuned as we dive deeper into our technical approach and the ongoing battle against invasive Phragmites.

With over 20 years in the field, PMG Vegetation has moved far beyond "standard" spraying to master the specific biological and structural challenges of the current w**d control landscape.

Over two decades of experience have taught us that a site in the rocky high-desert of Idaho requires a completely different chemical calibration than a low-lying substation in Texas. This has allowed us to develop site-specific "prescriptions" that combine multiple chemicals for a guaranteed herbicide mix where others fail.

When you hire PMG, you aren’t just paying for a technician to show up; you are hiring 20+ years of institutional knowledge, GPS-digitized transparency, and a proven track record of protecting critical infrastructure from the ground up.

In infrastructure management, " enough" is a liability. Just like medicine, effective vegetation control requires the right tools and a precise prescription.

We use Integrated Vegetation Management to match specialized equipment with site-specific chemical mixes, ensuring your land stays healthy and your compliance stays on track.

If your vegetation plan relies solely on Glyphosate, you aren’t just fighting a losing battle against w**ds, you’re fighting a losing battle against biology.

At PMG, we see the results of "Glyphosate-only" programs every day: frustrated managers, wasted budgets, and "Super Weeds" like Kochia and Palmer Amaranth that seem to thrive despite being sprayed.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘄𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 "𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰" 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗮𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺:
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗽: Species like Kochia have evolved. You might as well just be watering them. When you use the same chemical year after year, you are actually "selecting" for the strongest, most resistant plants to take over your site.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵-𝗶𝗻-𝘁𝗵𝗲-𝗣𝗮𝗻" 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁: Glyphosate is a post-emergent. It only kills what it touches today. It offers zero protection for tomorrow. Without a pre-emergent plan, new seeds will sprout the moment the next rain hits, leaving you right back where you started.

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: If you only spray when you see green, you are already behind. You’re paying for "emergency" burn-downs instead of investing in long-term site stability.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗠𝗚 "𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁" 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲
undefinedWe don't just "spray w**ds." We execute an Integrated Vegetation Management strategy:

𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: We use a expertly crafted cocktail of different chemicals. If a w**d is resistant to one chemical, the second or third one in our mix ensures a total kill.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: We apply a pre-emergent layer that neutralizes the "Seed Bank" before the plants ever break the surface.

𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Every area we spray is tracked. We provide data that proves application precision.

Stop re-spraying. Start reclaiming your site. Our goal is "Zero-Growth" in your gravel and well pads through science.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵'𝘀 (𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱) 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘀' 𝗪𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴!

A variant of "Spring Parsleys," Davis' Wavewing (Cymopterus davisii) is a specialized Idaho native. It’s a low-growing, rugged perennial that thrives in the rocky, volcanic soils often found near industrial access roads and BLM grazing lands in South-Central Idaho.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗱𝗮𝗵𝗼 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲
Davis' Wavewing is found primarily in the mountains and foothills of Idaho (like the Sawtooths and the Albion range). It’s a "pioneer" species. That means it’s often the first to grow in harsh, rocky areas. Because it stays low to the ground and blooms early, it is easily overlooked.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗧𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿𝘀" 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗟𝗠 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱
Because Davis' Wavewing lives in the exact rocky, open terrain that industrial sites are built on, it is directly threatened by:

𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀: This is the biggest threat. Cheatgrass moves into the rocky gaps where the Wavewing lives, creates a "carpet" of flammable fuel, and eventually leads to fires that the native Wavewing isn't evolved to survive.

𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗻𝗮𝗽𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗱: This invader releases "allelo-chemicals" into the soil—essentially a biological weapon that prevents native plants like the Wavewing from germinating.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗠𝗚 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲: 𝗕𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
When PMG treats a substation or access roads, we aren't just clearing the gravel; we are creating a biological buffer zone.

By stopping a Knapw**d or Cheatgrass breakout on a site, we prevent those seeds from "hitching a ride" on a service truck and being dumped into a pristine Idaho hillside where the Davis' Wavewing is making its stand.

In industrial vegetation management, the most dangerous w**ds are the ones you can’t see yet. Most land managers don't call for service until they see green breaking through the gravel, but by then, the "seed bank" has already started.

What is the "Seed Bank"?

Think of the soil beneath your substation or well pad, even if you mow the surface, there are millions of dormant seeds waiting to emerge.

Think about it, a single Palmer Amaranth plant can drop 500,000 seeds.

Kochia seeds can remain viable for years, waiting for one rainstorm to trigger a "flush."

If you wait until you see the w**ds, you are in Reactive Mode. You’re paying for emergency labor, higher chemical rates, and the risk of fire or safety violations.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗠𝗚 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗦𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆
Our strategy shifts the timeline from "reactive" to "proactive." Besides taking care of the plants that have already grown, we utilize Pre-Emergents to neutralize that seed bank.

The Result: Your site stays clean. No mid-July emergency calls, no "super-w**ds" blocking your sensors, and no fire hazards.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Investing in a regular treatment program is significantly more beneficial and cost efficient than a "spray-and-pray" approach in August. By stopping the seed bank, we reduce your total annual chemical load and eliminate the need for repeated, expensive "burn-down" visits.

03/13/2026

Throughout the West, Salt Cedar (Tamarisk) is more than a w**d, it’s a hydrological and structural threat to your site. Originally introduced for erosion control, this invader has become one of the most expensive liabilities for land managers.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝘁 𝗖𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 "𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁" 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲:
𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲-𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: A single mature Salt Cedar can consume up to 200 gallons of water per day. For sites near riparian zones or those relying on groundwater levels, a Salt Cedar infestation can literally "drink the site dry," lowering water tables and affecting localized soil stability.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗽: True to its name, Salt Cedar absorbs salt from deep groundwater and excretes it through its leaves. This creates a "toxic" topsoil layer that kills off stabilizing native grasses, leaving your site prone to severe erosion and dust control issues.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Salt Cedar builds up massive amounts of dry, "dead-wood" fuel. It is highly flammable. An infestation transforms a manageable vegetation area into a high-intensity fire hazard that can bridge the gap between the wildland and your critical assets.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗠𝗚 𝗧𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵
We start with mowing the cedars to help manage their growth and make opportunities to apply stronger control methods. As you see in the images below, without the initial mow, no one could forage through the patch of Salt Cedar.
