For a railfan, it doesn't get much better than this - an amazing day spent in and around the Queen of Steam, the "Mighty J" 611. I had two separate runs in the cab: the first, shown here, at the throttle (under the watchful guidance of master engineer Ted), and then later as fireman, coached by Rick. Just one hour in total, but it was an experience I'll never forget, operating such an iconic, amazing machine.

Little engine, big engine. Strasburg #3, a fully functional coal-burning miniature steam locomotive, gets some attention from her crew before being put away for the night after a hard day's work on May 20, 2023. Nearby, famous N&W #611 steams peacefully after her own day's labors have ended.

I'm now back home in New Hampshire, with many videos and photos to sort through and edit. Saying farewell to the 611 yesterday evening was bittersweet. In a week she'll be on her way home to Virginia.

The shop tour at the Strasburg Rail Road is an amazing experience for any railfan!

After yesterday's in-cab experiences, it's nice to be able to ride behind the 611 today.

The Queen of Steam, Norfolk & Western #611, passes the The Red Caboose Motel & Restaurant on its way home after a long day.

What a day, glorious day, this has been.

The Strasburg Rail Road is about more than big flashy steam locomotives! Here's their trusty diesel switcher hauling a lone boxcar down to Leaman Place to interchange with Norfolk Southern. He'll likely be coming back past in an hour or so with another string.
