Back to school shopping?? Ride SMTD and take advantage of the Illinois sales tax holiday! Illinois families preparing for the upcoming school year will soon get a break at the checkout counter as the state’s back-to-school sales tax holiday returns for the first time since 2022.

The tax holiday runs from Aug. 7 through Aug. 16, reducing the state’s portion of the sales tax on qualifying purchases from 6.25% to 1.25%.

During the 10-day period, shoppers can receive the reduced tax rate on qualifying clothing, footwear and school supplies. Clothing and footwear must be priced at less than $125 per item to qualify, while most eligible school supplies do not have a price limit.

According to the Illinois Department of Revenue, qualifying school supplies include items commonly found on back-to-school shopping lists, such as notebooks, folders, binders, backpacks, calculators, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, rulers, scissors and lunch boxes.

SMTD once again will provide a FREE park and ride shuttle service at the 2026 Old Settlers Days at Settlers Park in Rockton, IL on June 18-21. This annual summer festival draws thousands of attendees.
