For our latest My Teenage Me spotlight, Robert Maxwell of the The Port of Rosedale-Bolivar County, MS reminds us that patience, honesty, and strong relationships go a long way.
Meet Robert Maxwell, Port Director at the Port of Rosedale, whose journey in the maritime industry is rooted in perseverance, lifelong learning, and the power of relationships.
If he could give advice to his teenage self, it would be: “Be patient and don’t give up. Always keep looking for ways to reach a goal—even if the first way (or two) doesn’t work out like you hoped. Keep reaching, and don’t give up.”
For Robert, one of the most important lessons he’s learned throughout his career is the value of building genuine, honest relationships. “You never know who might be looking for exactly what you can offer or who might be willing to help by sharing their expertise and experiences,” he says. “Just remember—be honest. Say what you can do and do what you say. People respect that, and it goes a long way.”
When Robert first stepped into the role of Port Director, his learning and professional growth didn’t stop there. With the support of a forward-thinking board, he’s been able to pursue continued education in areas that directly impact the port’s growth and success; from port operations and maintenance to economic development, he’s taken part in various curricula and even earned certifications along the way, ensuring he’s equipped to meet the evolving needs of the industry.
Some of the most valuable skills he’s developed include active listening, critical thinking, problem-solving, and knowing how to access and apply the right resources at the right time. His story is a powerful reminder that success is a journey of constant growth, integrity, and determination.
