With the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaching, we pause to remember the APA members who lost their lives that day.

Captain John A. Ogonowski was a 23-year American Airlines pilot and a U.S. Air Force veteran who flew C-141 transport aircraft during the Vietnam War. Away from aviation, he operated a 150-acre farm in Dracut, Mass., where he lived with his wife and three daughters. He was deeply involved in preserving farmland and became the first mentor farmer for the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project, providing land and guidance to Cambodian immigrant farmers beginning agricultural careers in Massachusetts.

First Officer Thomas F. McGuinness Jr. was a 12-year American Airlines pilot, a Boston University graduate, and a former U.S. Navy F-14 pilot who attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He and his wife, Cheryl, were the parents of two children. His aviation legacy continues at American Airlines as his son, Thomas M. McGuinness, is a PHX-based Captain.

We will profile the pilots of Flight 77 tomorrow.

Ellen Saracini, wife of United Flight 175 Captain Victor Saracini has spent the past twenty-five years advocating for secondary barriers on all aircraft. Twenty-five years later, these barriers remain uninstalled. We urge United Airlines to install secondary barriers on every aircraft, without exceptions.

As we approach the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, United ALPA produced a short documentary to commemorate those we lost, honor their families, and reflect on the lasting impact of that day. We thank Ellen Saracini, wife of United Flight 175 Captain Victor Saracini, and Melodie Homer, wife of United Flight 93 First Officer LeRoy Homer Jr., for sharing their perspectives and helping us remember the people behind the names.
