The original cajon drums were built from old shipping crates like these. Peruvian slaves were not allowed to play their native drums. Instead, they had to improvise with what they had.

This is how the cajon was born. I'm doing my best to recreate one of these original drums. This one is built from an old shipping crate. I'm adding just a bit of reinforcement on the inside to keep things stable.

I'm working on a nice how-to video while finishing up some Christmas drums. These guides will complement the ones on my website and allow anyone to build a great quality cajon drum with simple tools.

Man, all those how to guides I wrote in 2013 are bad and outdated. I've learned so much since then. I'll update them with more clear instructions, better methods and cleaner photography very soon.

I just want to show off the durability of my instruments. This is one of my early drums from back when I was still experimenting with construction and finishes. I kept this one around. My brother and I use it as our personal cajon and it's been to music festivals, covered in mud and sprayed off with a hose. We've dropped it on concrete and left it in a hot van for weeks in the Arkansas sun. It's a little dented up but sounds and functions as good as new! I've also been checking up with my early customers. I haven't had ANY problems reported so far.

I can't wait to get back in the shop this spring! My travels are going well and I'm meeting wonderful people, but I miss woodworking.

I love seeing my drums in action! Here's Saving Abel playing a recent acoustic show. I love it!

I spent yesterday finishing up one last cajon before I leave. Sorry guys, but I'm keeping this one for myself.

After almost a year of hard work and lots of help, I'm finally to the point where I think I can fully support myself building cajon drums. I just put in my two week notice and I couldn't be happier!

I can't tell you how good it feels to have all my work with Quain Percussion pay off. It's been a hard year. I still can't believe how well things worked out, but I've had a ton of help. Thank you Kyle Manning, John LeCompt, Steven Pulley, Paul Champa Jennings, Lewi Cajon, Nautilus Cajons, Steve Head, Heidi Joubert and Arkansas Music-United for all your help, advice and support. I couldn't have done it without you guys.

That was the good news. The bad news is that I'm going to be doing a little traveling soon and I won't be taking any orders until after I get back. Sorry about that!

Starting in a week, Quain Percussion cajon drums will be available at The Musician's Exchange in Van Buren, Arkansas. They will be my first physical retailer, so I'm pretty excited!

I delivered a check for $1000 to Aaron of The Van today. It's a really great charity and they're doing a lot to help the tornado victims. There are still communities that the FEMA and the Red Cross haven't even touched. People are selling scrap metal from their destroyed homes to pay for hotels and hospital bills. It's pretty grim.

If you want to donate, the link is still here: http://quainpercussion.com/mayflower-disaster-relief/

In just 10 hours, we've raised about $750 for the victims of the Mayflower and Vilonia, Arkansas tornado. The Dogecoin community is awesome!
