Owner wanted it gone.
Now they like it.
That’s a mature southern red cedar — You don’t see many of them around here. Left unpruned, they just sit there as a dark screen. Once the interior was opened and the trunk and main limbs showed, the tree actually had presence.
What changed: • The canopy was thinned so you can see through it instead of staring at a solid wall
• The trunk and primary limbs are visible from the street now
• It still has enough crown for shade and a sound buffer
A tree this size, in a neighborhood that doesn’t have many of them, is worth the occasional prune.

No arborist.
No real tree protection plan.
Just some orange fence and an excavator.
This is what happens when work goes on in the Hammock without anybody looking out for the trees.
Roots get crushed under the equipment.
Soil gets piled up against the trunks.
The grade changes and buries the flare.
Over time the compaction just slowly starves the canopy.
It might look okay the day the crew packs up, but a few years later you’re staring at one-sided dieback and trees that never really come back.
These live oaks and the rest of this hardwood marine hammock are a big part of what makes Palm Coast feel the way it does. Once they’re gone or damaged, we don’t get them back.
Let’s be cognizant about our tree care in the Hammock so we can keep the Heart of the Hammock intact.
If you’re building or clearing near mature trees, bring an ISA-certified arborist in early. A little planning goes a long way.
