Important News: HOURCAR Announces Sunset

Earlier this summer, we asked members for help in reaching out to elected representatives as we sought to bridge a budget gap caused by nationwide vehicle insurance increases and shifting federal support.

After completing due diligence and consulting with legal counsel, HOURCAR’s Board of Directors has voted to sunset operations with a final service date of Thursday, October 15, 2026.

It has been an honor to be part of over 4,000 active members’ commutes to work, medical appointments, grocery stores, and family obligations.

Thank you for being a part of this journey.

Our team just wrapped up work on an National Science Foundation (NSF) grant-funded project, called Data-Driven Analytics for Scaling Up Community Carshare. A few team members recently presented in an NSF project celebration in Washington DC showing research outcomes. We got lots of great feedback from other folks passionate about carsharing.

We're very excited about the tools that we've developed, which will help us redistribute vehicles to better meet members' needs. For instance, we've learned that there aren't enough vehicles in certain neighborhoods (i.e. South Minneapolis, both Downtown areas, etc.) for members to take the trips that they need, so we are aiming to redistribute more vehicles to those areas.

If you want to learn more about our research, check out this video we created to summarize our work!

Cool!

The $24,950 Slate has crank windows, no touchscreen, and over 180,000 eager buyers in line. After a spin in the prototype, we find out if this stripped-down, ultra-simple electric vehicle can actually deliver.

We've been reminding people that, in addition to our awesome free-float Evie's, we also have an additional 70 'hub-based' cars. These vehicles are scattered across the metro and are cool because you can book them for immediate use or reserve up to six months in advance. They are slightly cheaper than cousin Evie, but you do need to bring them back to their home base when your reserved time slot is up. Members love them for errands, stacked plans, or just making 100% sure there's a car available for the return leg.
And LOOK! There are six hub locations along University Avenue. They are at convenient neighborhood locations, but you can also take the Green Line to one of these hub-based cars and get wherever you need to go.
HOURCAR is YOUR car! Get there.

HOURCAR & Evie carshare is an awesome program for students, staff, and faculty attending and working at our incredible local colleges and universities. We are visiting campuses all over the place for the next few weeks!
Come say hello at the U of MN Sustainability Action Fair this Friday, 11:30-3:30, to learn more about why our non-profit carshare program is a great, affordable, and convenient option for you (including free parking at the meters!).
Meanwhile, across the river, we will also be posted up at Macalester College, talking to first years about getting around the Twin Cities. Macalester College and surrounding neighborhood is a very active carshare location, a great place to launch your new car-free lifestyle.
