Moving this summer in the Twin Cities? Here are a few things worth knowing before moving day.

1. Book early and lock in your logistics. Summer is peak moving season, which means more competition for the time slots you want, nearby parking for the truck, and elevator reservations in your building. The earlier you get everything confirmed, the smoother moving day will go.

2. Keep an eye on the forecast — but don’t stress about it. If your items are properly boxed, your furniture is padded, and everything is sealed in plastic wrap, your belongings will be well protected whether it’s raining or hot and humid. A little Minnesota summer weather won’t slow a prepared crew down.

3. Build extra time into your day for construction. Summer is road construction season in Minnesota, and drives across the metro can take longer than usual. Some roads also have weight restrictions that prohibit large trucks, so don’t be surprised if your movers take a slightly different route than you did — they know what they’re doing.

On average, summer moves book almost twice as early as winter moves. That means you should be reaching out to moving companies about a month before your moving date, otherwise you risk missing out on availability.

Wondering whether it's worth it to pay for movers?

In some cases it may make sense to move yourself.

If it's not a big move, you have able-bodied friends who are happy to help, your belongings aren't particularly valuable, and you're on a tight budget – then you can probably pull it off on your own.

But if you don't have all of those things, trying to DIY your move can be a big risk to yourself, your belongings, and end up costing as much as hiring movers in the long run.

You don't want to discover the hidden costs of moving yourself – like injury, damage to your belongings, or damage to your home – when it's already too late!

Before you hire a mover, there’s a term you should know: valuation coverage.

It’s not the same as insurance — and “we’re insured” doesn’t say anything about what happens to your belongings. A mover’s general insurance covers their workers and your walls. Your stuff is a completely different conversation.

In Minnesota, the law sets the minimum payout for damaged items at $0.60 per pound. That’s it. A 10-pound laptop gets you $6.00. This isn’t a loophole — it’s just how carrier liability law works, and it’s been the standard floor for MN movers ever since the state started regulating them through MnDOT.

The good news: you have options. Ask your moving company about additional valuation coverage before move day, and check whether your renter’s or homeowner’s policy covers items in transit.
