Wondering whether it's worth it to pay for movers?

In some cases it may make sense to move yourself.

If it's not a big move, you have able-bodied friends who are happy to help, your belongings aren't particularly valuable, and you're on a tight budget – then you can probably pull it off on your own.

But if you don't have all of those things, trying to DIY your move can be a big risk to yourself, your belongings, and end up costing as much as hiring movers in the long run.

You don't want to discover the hidden costs of moving yourself – like injury, damage to your belongings, or damage to your home – when it's already too late!

Before you hire a mover, there’s a term you should know: valuation coverage.

It’s not the same as insurance — and “we’re insured” doesn’t say anything about what happens to your belongings. A mover’s general insurance covers their workers and your walls. Your stuff is a completely different conversation.

In Minnesota, the law sets the minimum payout for damaged items at $0.60 per pound. That’s it. A 10-pound laptop gets you $6.00. This isn’t a loophole — it’s just how carrier liability law works, and it’s been the standard floor for MN movers ever since the state started regulating them through MnDOT.

The good news: you have options. Ask your moving company about additional valuation coverage before move day, and check whether your renter’s or homeowner’s policy covers items in transit.

As a Minnesotan, you know how this time of year can be - temperatures sometimes swing from freezing to roasting in a matter of days. Minnesota storage units can hit -20° in January and 100°+ in July. That’s a brutal range for anything you actually care about.

What are the busiest months for moving in Minnesota?

We looked at the last five years of our moving data to see the exact breakdown. While the peak of busy season can shift slightly from year to year, the pattern is clear: the warmer months see much higher demand.

If you’re planning a move between May and August, booking early can make a big difference in getting the date you want.

Planning and preparation are key to a successful move, so don’t wait too long to reach out for moving help.

Thinking about moving on a Friday or Saturday? You’re not alone.

After thousands of moves in the Twin Cities, here’s what we consistently see:

Busiest days: Friday & Saturday
Slowest days: Tuesday & Wednesday

If you want a Friday or Saturday move, plan to book around 4–6 weeks in advance. In the summer months those days fill up even faster, so don't wait until the last minute to reach out to movers!

We've been moving for long enough to know that planning early is always best.

A few factors impact exactly how early it makes sense to secure a booking:

1️⃣ The size of your move - the bigger the move, the earlier you should book
2️⃣ The time of year - if you're moving in the summer, book early
3️⃣ The day of the week - Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest days for moving

Most people dread the thought of moving during winter, but there are quite a few reasons why February is a great time to move!

1️⃣ We are in the off-peak season, so our moving rates are lower than they are in the summer and fall
2️⃣ You don't have to book as far in advance to reserve a Friday or Saturday
3️⃣ The forecast calls for some great weather in the next few weeks
