True, Essex Street is wicked, but The Salem Habor is not to be missed on your spooky stroll through Salem. At the end of our ghost tour, a lot of guests ask us what we recommend doing with the rest of the night to keep the eerie vibes going. We recommend heading down to the waterfront before settling into one of the fantastic bars and lounges with late hours. It’s eerily quiet there after sunset and there is a cinematic sense of liminality if you walk allllll the way out to the lighthouse in the darkness.

ABOUT OUR TOUR COMPANY
We want to get the word out about our new Downtown Hocus Pocus Tour! It is designed, run, and owned by the same devoted locals who have been tingling spines on The Salem Night Tour since 2006. Our small business is proud to be entirely Salem-based and dedicated to hiring only local historians as guides in order to offer North Shore scholars work that they love all year long. We put our hearts and souls into entertaining and educating audiences about the history and the magic of “The Witch City”

ABOUT OUR GUEST WINNIFRED
Bette Midler Tribute Artist, Jennica McCleary, originated Winifred Sanderson at Disney’s Magic Kingdom production ‘Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular’ 2015 (a now viral video) in Orlando, FL. She has worked with Legends in Concert and Pattycake Productions and has been featured MTV, VH1, Entertainment Tonight. She was also featured in The Hocus Pocus 25th Anniversary Bash on Freeform as well as Freeform’s Halloween Road. She is thrilled to have conjured Winnie’s Rock Cauldron Cabaret, a fan-fiction style concert, while battling breast cancer, to celebrate everyone’s inner magical witch.

Nothing like a dark and stormy afternoon to bring out the gorgeous gloom in Witch City.

If you’ve booked one of our ghost tours and there is rain on the forecast, don’t worry, we’re still on! Summer showers are so cinematic here in our spooky, little town and we genuinely love running our tours in the rain. The skies are dramatic, the streets are suddenly abandoned, and the vibes are just so spine-tingly. It’s the perfect setting for spinning scary stories…

We loooove a walk down Essex Street at night to see the iconic Ropes Mansion. This historic beauty featured as Allison’s house in the Disney film “Hocus Pocus”. What you don’t see in the movie is the STUNNING colonial rose garden in the backyard. It’s open to the public before sunset, so be sure to walk around the right side of the house when you stop by.

And if you’re a Sanderson Sister’s fan, we’d love to invite you on our daytime Downtown Hocus Pocus Tour, which stops here by day on the weekends. Our guides get into the deep-cuts fun facts and fascinating history about the filming done here in Salem, MA. Check it out on Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00pm~ 🎟️Tickets in bio!

Here’s everything you need to know about how to check out the oldest colonial burial ground in Salem, MA.

Charter Street Cemetery is a historic treasure in the heart of Witch City. We tell ghost stories just outside of its gates every evening on The Salem Night Tour, but if you want to go inside, you’ll have to visit by day!

WHERE IS IT LOCATED?
You’ll find it at 51 Charter Street, right next to The Salem Witch Trials Memorial.

DOES IT COST MONEY TO VISIT?
It’s free to visit!

WHEN IS IT OPEN TO VISITORS?
Always check signs at the location for updates, but, usually:
-Right now, during peak season (May 14-November 14), it is open from 10:00am-6;00pm.
-During October, you must sign up for a visiting time on the cemetery’s website, www.charterstreetcemetery.com
-During the off season (November 15-May 13), hours are usually 12:00pm-4:00pm

THERE ARE TWO GATES, WHICH IS THE ENTRANCE?
When the cemetery is open, there is always an attendant standing at the gate that is in use! Wherever you see a historian stationed is where you can begin your adventure. Step right up and get a map from them before going inside. Most days, the gate just inside The Salem Witch Trials Memorial is the one that is open.

The Salem Witch Trials Memorials at 51 Charter Street is open 24/7 and we highly recommend a visit after sunset. It can be a uniquely meditative experience in the silence of the night when the crowds have gone, the music has been turned off for the evening, and a stillness settles.

This beautiful, public courtyard was created in 1992 to acknowledge the victims of the tragedy that unfolded here in 1692. Each lost soul has a granite bench devoted to them and some of their last words are carved underfoot at the threshold of the site.
