Salinas Area Modelers

Salinas Area Modelers Salinas Area Modelers is an organization dedicated to the enjoyment of model aviation. Whilst our roots come from flying r/c models, we also have 2 car tracks.

We are located just west of Chualar, CA on the central coast of California, near Monterey.

Our first Race of the Ruddergate Race Series was a great time! We had 15 drivers who registered and raced a total of 20 cars, spread across the 3 classes. We also added a “Rookie” class for folks who were new to driving r/c cars. The rookie class spanned almost 80 years in age difference. The Losi Sprint cars were the most popular with 2 heats of 6 cars. Unfortunately we got rained out after the first set of heat races. Trophies were awarded based on heat results. All in all it was a great day, great friends, great food and fun racing!

To top off the day we had a honor of awarding Randy Bonetti a Lifetime membership for his “blood, sweat and tears” for everything he has done and continues to do, for the club. The dirt oval track was Randy’s vision and he really made a great track. Thanks Randy!

Next race in the Ruddergate Race Series will be at our June 27th Ruddergate. No races for May, but the track will be available for members to practice.

Want to learn how to fly r/c airplanes? Technology has made r/c flying more accessible than ever. With many planes touting that you can teach yourself to fly, more people than ever are exploring the joys of remote control flight. Even with all this tech, we, at Salinas Area Modelers see folks regularly who are frustrated by the same challenges that have existed for decades and can benefit from some instruction and education. We are always available for instruction, with your own plane or club planes. Come by and check out the flying field and meet our members any time. Did you see that we have monthly open house events, called Ruddergates?

Landing Pattern Lesson:

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make in RC flying is treating landing like an afterthought — something you just “figure out” once you’re ready to come down.

That’s exactly how you end up chasing the plane all over the sky, overshooting the runway, or dumping it in short.

A proper circuit isn’t just for show — it’s the difference between controlled flying and hoping for the best.

When you fly a circuit — upwind, crosswind, downwind, base, final — you’re doing a few critical things whether you realise it or not:

You’re setting up early, not reacting late

You’re keeping the aircraft in a predictable position relative to yourself

You’re managing height and speed gradually, not all at once

And most importantly, you’re giving yourself time to think

That downwind leg is where the landing actually begins — not final.

That’s where you check your height, reduce power, and decide if things look right. If they don’t, you’ve still got options.

Turn base too late? You’ll land short.

Turn base too early? You’ll overshoot.

Rush it? You’ll chase it all the way down.

The circuit fixes all of that.

It builds rhythm:

Downwind → settle the aircraft

Base → position and descend

Final → line up and commit

No panic. No last-second corrections. Just a controlled sequence.

And here’s the part people don’t like hearing — you shouldn’t even be thinking about landing until you can fly a consistent circuit every time.

Because landing isn’t a separate skill. It’s just the last part of a good circuit.

Modern trainers and stabilisation systems can hide bad habits for a while. They’ll keep the wings level and smooth things out. But they won’t teach you spacing, timing, or judgement. That only comes from flying proper patterns over and over.

Watch experienced pilots — they don’t “come in and hope.”

They fly the same circuit every time. Same spacing. Same turns. Same setup.

That’s why their landings look easy.

If you want to improve quickly, stop focusing on the landing itself and start focusing on the circuit. Get that right, and the landing almost takes care of itself.

Skip it, and you’ll be fighting the plane all the way to the ground.

If you’ve been following us for the last year, or so, you know that our members have been working tirelessly on a new dirt oval. Well…. The track is to a point that we feel it is appropriate to hold some races.

We will be holding a race series this season, to coincide with our Ruddergate Potluck BBQ’s. Our first race will be Saturday, April 25th.

This process will be a work in progress, while we work out our system, so please bear with us. We will be racing the classes listed on the flyer. There will be some requirements of the cars, but let’s just say, we are aiming to keep them as stock as possible. We’ll publish more in the next week or so.

Link to the race page at:

https://salinasareamodelers.org/events/ruddergate-race-series/

Driver’s meeting at 1:00 pm. There will be open practice in the morning.

ALL DRIVERS MUST BE SALINAS AREA MODELERS MEMBERS. This is a requirement of our use agreement and lease. We’re not trying to be difficult…. We have one type of membership and all members get use of the whole facility. As our origins are based in r/c airplanes, all members must join the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics), take the TRUST test and register with the FAA. Check the website at for more information on joining. Total cost to join is around $300, for the first year. Dues are $100 / year (plus AMA dues) after the initial year.

We will have the ability to take membership sign-ups on site.

Mother Nature seems to be confused this week…. With much of the country in chaos (weather wise), we have been having a beautiful week. Here’s a few shots of the goings on at Salinas Area Modelers.

Just a friendly reminder that this Saturday, February 28th is a Work Day at the field. The primary focus will be cleaning up / out the containers. If we have enough folks, we will tackle some other projects, as well! The field will be closed while the work day is in progress.

Pic for attention is the scratch built Britten Norman Islander, built by our life member, Chuck Bosso. Here it is getting ready to re-maiden with it's new electric power plants.

Do you ever get to the airfield and have a nice chat with your mates, while putting your plane together?

It’s great to see your buddies and talk about airplanes, just make sure you go through a pre-flight check that includes checking your wing bolts… and aileron direction… and other control surfaces… and the batteries are plugged in… and… and… and….

It was another beautiful winter day @ the airfield!

The dirt oval track got its love yesterday! The track was rototilled (to even things out and bring rocks to the surface), raked (to get the rocks out), leveled / graded and rolled. The track is really coming together…. Thanks to everyone who helped! And…. What a heck of a beautiful day & view from the club.
