THERE ISN'T A DRIVER SHORTAGE.
THERE'S A QUALITY DRIVER SHORTAGE.

The industry spent years trying to put as many asses in seats as possible.
Lower the barrier.
Speed up the training.
Fill the truck.
Move the freight.

Then experienced drivers started walking away, and everybody wondered where the good drivers went.

A CDL doesn't automatically make somebody a truck driver.
We don't need more people holding steering wheels.

We need more people who actually know what the hell they're doing with one.

Trucking used to have something called the Brotherhood.
You broke down, somebody stopped.
You needed information, somebody answered.
You were backing into a tight spot, somebody got out and helped.
You didn't need to know the driver. Being a trucker was enough.
Now?
Half will drive right past you.
The other half will pull out their phone and record you.
Did trucking get worse... or did truckers just stop giving a damn about each other?
We went from the Brotherhood to the Every-Man-for-Himself Club.

There used to be a place in every good truck stop where the miles stopped for a little while.

The old horseshoe counter.
You'd pull up a stool next to drivers you'd never met, order some coffee and something hot, and before long everybody at that counter knew where you'd been, what the roads looked like, where the bears were sitting, who was hiring and which route you damn sure didn't want to take.

Nobody was staring at a phone.
Drivers talked.

They swapped stories, told lies, gave advice, busted each other's chops and sometimes learned more sitting at that counter than they ever learned behind the wheel.

You came in a stranger and half the time left knowing everybody sitting there.
Truck stops still exist.

But damn, I miss when they felt like they belonged to truck drivers.

Who remembers the horseshoe counter?
