For years, I thought a dispatcher's job was to make the company money.
I was wrong. A dispatcher's real job is to protect the money the company has already made. Once the load is booked, the revenue already exists.
What happens next determines whether that load stays profitable.
One missed appointment.
One misunderstanding with a broker.
One detention request that was never asked for.
One driver who isn't kept in the loop.
One problem that wasn't solved in time.
That's all it takes to turn a profitable load into a bad one.
I've seen dispatchers book average-paying freight and still make the company more money than dispatchers who booked the highest rates.
Why?
Because they communicated. They planned ahead. They solved problems before they became expensive. They protected the driver. They protected the customer. They protected the profit.
The longer I'm in this industry, the more I realize this:
The best dispatcher isn't the one who books the highest-paying load.
The best dispatcher is the one who makes sure the company keeps every dollar it already earned.

I've noticed something interesting.
About 80% of the freight we move never comes from a load board.
Around 50% comes from our dedicated lanes.
Another 30% comes from relationships we've built over the years—brokers who send us weekly projects, monthly freight, morning emails, Telegram messages, or simply pick up the phone.
Only about 20% comes from the spot market.
The interesting part?
Some of these brokers have been working with us since 2019.
That didn't happen because we booked one good load.
It happened because every load was treated as the beginning of a long-term partnership, not a one-time transaction.
So here's my advice:
When you book a load from a load board, don't just think about today's rate.
Think about how to make that broker call you directly next time.
That's where consistency, trust, and better opportunities come from.
Load boards find you loads. Relationships build your business.
