5 Essential Tips for a Safari with Kids 🦁🐘

We have now done two safaris with kids. While they come with a higher price tag and more logistics than most other trips, our kids have throughly enjoyed them. Our first trip was to Namibia (Wilderness Doro Nawas and Natural Selection Etosha Safarihoek) and our recent trip took us to Zambia (Islands of Siankaba) and Botswana (Chobe National Park).

1. Choose Child-Friendly & Malaria-Free Zones. Many lodges actually restrict certain ages so it is important to do your research or use a safari specialist like Piper & Heath to find suitable accommodations. Lodges like Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa actually cater to guests of all ages.

2. Rethink the Schedule & Drive Length. Safaris typically involve an early morning drive and another around dusk for optimal animal viewing. We opted for private safari vehicles on both of our trips which allowed us to be more flexible with the schedule and timing. Depending on your kids' ages, you can request shorter game drives (2 hours maximum) or be more flexible with departure times.

3. Turn Sightseeing into an Interactive Game. We were fortunate to have incredible guides on our first trip - they had binoculars, a checklist of animals & birds to look for and one guide even took my son's request for scorpions very seriously (going as far as a post-dinner walk with a black light to find them!). Bringing along a camera for kids to capture memories is a great way to keep them engaged.

4. Dress Smart & Prioritize Comfort. We've worn layered, neutral clothing on our safaris because the weather often changes from cool early mornings to warmer daytime temperatures. Other items are a hat with a chinstrap, sunscreen and insect repellant.

5. Consider When & Where To Go. We have opted for July travel both times because it was the middle of winter in our destination (usually drier/cooler). This has helped tremendously with comfort and aligns well with our school breaks. We have also selected private reserves versus public reserves as they offer completely different experiences. In private reserves, your guide can drive off the main roads and get closer to animals.
