In the hills above the town of Visoko in Bosnia, there is a mountain shaped almost too perfectly. From a distance, its faces rise in flat, triangular slopes that meet at a point, and in 2005 a man named Semir Osmanagić looked at it and declared it was no mountain at all. He called it the Pyramid of the Sun, and claimed it was the largest human-made pyramid on Earth, older than the ones in Egypt by thousands of years.

The world's archaeologists and geologists pushed back hard. They examined the hill and concluded it is a natural formation, a type of landform called a flatiron, shaped by geology and not by human hands. They warned that the digging was damaging a real, ancient settlement that sits on the same site.

And yet the story refuses to die. Osmanagić kept excavating, uncovered a network of tunnels beneath the valley, and turned Visoko into a destination that draws visitors from around the world who feel something there. Believers point to the strange angles, the flat stone surfaces, the sheer symmetry of the thing.

The truth may be far stranger than we have been told, not because a buried pyramid is hiding under that hill, but because of how badly people want one to be.

In the small town of Loveland, Ohio, there is a creature that two police officers swear they saw with their own eyes. The legend starts in 1955, when a man driving a quiet road by the Little Miami River late at night claimed he saw three figures crouched by the roadside. Around four feet tall, leathery skin, frog-like faces, and one of them, he said, was holding a wand that threw off sparks.

It would have stayed a tall tale, except for what happened seventeen years later. On a cold February night in 1972, Loveland police officer Ray Shockey was driving along Riverside Drive when his headlights caught something on the road. It rose up on two legs, three to four feet tall, with a frog-like face and mottled skin. It stared at him, then bolted over the guardrail and vanished down the riverbank.

Two weeks later, another Loveland officer, Mark Matthews, saw it too. He fired his service weapon. Years later he tried to put the legend to rest, saying it was only a large iguana that had lost its tail. But the man who first reported it stood by what he saw.

Could it be that a trained officer, alone on patrol, mistook a runaway pet for a standing, staring creature he had never seen before?

On the southern edge of Mexico City, swallowed by a field of black volcanic rock, sits a pyramid that almost no one talks about, and it may be the oldest in all of Mesoamerica. Cuicuilco was built around 2,700 years ago, long before the Aztecs, long before even the great city of Teotihuacan. And unlike the famous step pyramids, this one is round, a series of stacked stone rings rising from the plain.

Then the mountain came for it. A volcano called Xitle erupted and sent a river of lava across the entire site, burying the temple and the city around it under as much as seven metres of solid rock. In places the stone lies more than thirty feet deep. For most of the structure, excavation is simply impossible. We have only uncovered the top.

So we are left guessing. How old is it really, when the lava sealed away the lower layers and the foundations we would need to date it? Who built a round pyramid here, and why, before the cultures we credit with inventing them? The survivors of that eruption are thought to have walked north and helped build Teotihuacan, carrying whatever they knew with them.

Makes you wonder how much older our history runs than the parts we are able to dig up.

What do you think about this?In 1862, a farmer clearing a field in Veracruz, Mexico hit something with his plow. Not a rock. A face. Carved in black basalt, taller than a man, with full lips, wide nose, heavy brow, and an expression somewhere between calm and command.That was the first of them. To date, archaeologists have catalogued seventeen colossal stone heads carved by the Olmec civilization, the so called mother culture of Mesoamerica. They date from around 1500 to 400 BC, which puts them roughly contemporary with the building of the Parthenon.Each head was carved from a single block of basalt. The largest weighs in at twenty five tons. The quarries are sourced to the Tuxtla Mountains, between fifty and a hundred miles from where the heads were finally placed. The Olmec did not have the wheel, did not have draft animals, did not have iron tools. They moved these blocks through jungle, across rivers, with rope and human hands.And then the faces themselves. Mainstream scholars call them portraits of Olmec rulers, and there is good evidence for that. But the features have been debated for over a century. Some researchers see clear African characteristics and have argued for trans Atlantic contact long before Columbus. Others see indigenous Mesoamerican features misread through a colonial lens.Either way, the achievement is staggering. A civilization with no metal, no wheel, no horse, moving twenty five ton stones through swamp, then carving them into faces that still look you in the eye three thousand years later.Makes you wonder what the story we have been told about who came first is really missing.

For almost two hundred years the Knights Templar were the most powerful men in Europe. They began as a handful of warrior monks guarding pilgrims to Jerusalem, and grew into the richest organization on the continent, the bankers of kings, holders of castles and fleets and a war chest that even monarchs envied.

Then, on Friday the thirteenth of October, 1307, it all came apart in a single morning. King Philip the Fourth of France, deep in debt to the order, sent out sealed orders to be opened at dawn across the country. In one coordinated sweep, hundreds of Templars were arrested, their Grand Master Jacques de Molay among them, and the crown moved to seize everything they owned.

But here is the part that has fascinated treasure hunters ever since. When the king's men opened the vaults, the legendary Templar treasure was not there. The order's great fleet, said to have been anchored at the port of La Rochelle, slipped away and was never accounted for. Where it went, and what it carried, no one has ever proven. The trail runs cold into legend, toward Scotland's Rosslyn Chapel, toward islands in the Atlantic, toward a fortune that may have simply vanished.

What if the wealthiest brotherhood in medieval Europe saw the arrests coming and moved their treasure somewhere it has quietly waited for seven hundred years?

For as long as modern medicine has existed, doctors believed the same thing. When the heart stops and blood stops reaching the brain, you have only a few minutes before the brain goes dark and silent for good. Everything after that is just the body shutting down.

Then a team led by a resuscitation specialist named Dr. Sam Parnia decided to actually test it. In a study spanning twenty five hospitals, they placed brain monitors on patients while doctors performed CPR on them, while these people were, by every clinical definition, dead. What the monitors recorded should not have been possible. In some patients, bursts of organized, near normal brain activity flickered back, sometimes as long as an hour into the resuscitation.

And a number of those who survived came back with stories. They described watching the whole thing from above, seeing the team work on their own body, feeling a deep sense of peace, reviewing their lives. The researchers gave it a careful name. Recalled experiences of death.

These are not campfire stories. They are brain readings logged in hospitals and published in medical journals.

Is it possible that some part of awareness lingers after the heart quits, in that gray space we have always assumed was simply nothing?

The RMS Queen Mary was once the fastest, grandest ocean liner in the world. She carried movie stars across the Atlantic, then carried thousands of troops through World War Two. In 1967 she sailed into Long Beach, California, dropped anchor for the last time, and never left. Today she is a floating hotel. She is also called one of the most haunted places in America.

During her decades at sea, at least forty nine people died aboard her. Most were ordinary deaths, illness and heart attacks. But two of them happened in the engine room, fifty feet below the waterline, where a heavy watertight door known as Door 13 crushed two men at different points in the ship's history. Guests today report cold spots there and the sound of someone trapped below.

Then there is the first class pool, drained for years now, where staff and visitors describe hearing a child laughing and splashing in water that is not there. And Stateroom B340, sealed off for decades, where guests have reported sheets torn from the bed, faucets turning themselves on, and knocking from inside the walls.

Skeptics rightly note that some of these tales were polished up over the years to sell tickets. Yet people keep walking off that ship shaken by something they cannot explain.

Could it be that a ship that carried so much life, and so much death, held onto a little of both?

On the morning of June 30, 1908, the sky over a remote stretch of Siberia split open. Reindeer herders camped near the Tunguska River saw a column of light brighter than the sun race across the sky. Then came a flash, a thunderclap heard hundreds of miles away, and a wave of heat so intense that men were thrown off their feet and knocked senseless. One herder said he felt as though his shirt had caught fire.

When the dust settled, roughly eight hundred square miles of forest had been flattened. An estimated eighty million trees lay on their sides, all pointing away from a single center, like matchsticks blown flat by one enormous breath. The blast carried the force of something like ten to fifteen megatons, close to a thousand times the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

Here is the part that has puzzled scientists for over a century. There is no crater. Whatever did this never actually hit the ground. The leading explanation is that an asteroid or comet exploded in the air miles above the surface. But the first scientific expedition did not reach the site until 1927, almost twenty years later, and by then the evidence had nineteen winters to fade.

Makes you wonder how little warning we would get if the next one arrived tomorrow.

Guadalcanal is best known for the brutal World War Two battles fought across its jungles. But the people who actually live in the Solomon Islands tell a story the history books leave out. They say they share their islands with giants.

Not a legend from the distant past. A living presence. An Australian helicopter pilot named Marius Boirayon spent years on the islands, married a local woman, and earned the trust of villagers who described the same thing over and over. Beings far taller than any man, some said over ten feet, with long hair, heavy brows, and reddish eyes, living deep in the interior mountains. Boirayon gathered these accounts into a book in 2010, and what struck him was how consistent they were among people who had never met.

The islanders treat it as ordinary fact. They point to caves they will not enter and stretches of bush they avoid after dark. They describe oversized footprints turning up around remote villages and work sites. Even during the war, there were scattered reports from soldiers of enormous figures glimpsed in the hills.

What if there are still corners of this planet so remote, and so rarely entered, that something the size of a legend could go on living there, unbothered by the modern world?
