National Heat Awareness Day serves as a reminder that heatstroke happens faster than we think — especially for kids.

Tragedies in hot cars are heartbreaking, but they are 100% preventable. Let’s protect our most vulnerable passengers this summer.

At the beginning of May, the NMDOT Traffic Safety Division teamed up with Safer New Mexico Now for car seat clinics and they were quite successful, but it is time for more safety for small children.

Today we celebrated the ribbon cutting for the NM 101 University Roadway Reconstruction Project near Mesilla, an important investment in safety, connectivity, and infrastructure for our community.

This project, which kicked off in December 2024, included, widening NM 101 (University Avenue) from Avenida de Mesilla to South Main Street, new curb and gutter along with new sidewalks and a multi-use path with ADA ramps and much more.

This project represents strong collaboration and a shared commitment to improving transportation and supporting the future growth of our region. We appreciate the dedication of all partners, crews, and community members who helped make this project possible.

NMDOT Chama Patrol was invited to participate in Career Day at the local elementary school.

The team brought Blizzard Wizard, the snowplow, a grader with a snowplow attachment, and a tractor with a mower deck attached.

Students from kindergarten through eighth grade learned what each machine does, how it does it, and why it’s needed in our fleet of road maintenance vehicles.

Some finishing touches to recently paved NM 70 in Lordsburg.

Crews have been making adjustments to manhole covers following to get them to the level on the newly finished road.

Once completed, these repairs will help provide a smoother ride for motorists traveling through the area.

Reduce speeds in the work zone and when the crew has left, the speed limit is still 35 mph.

Carrizozo Municipal Airport (F37)

Carrizozo Municipal Airport completed pavement preservation on Runway 6/24, connector taxiways, and the apron in 2025, sealing cracks, applying a surface treatment, and remarking to extend pavement life.

The airport also advanced a safety upgrade to replace its aging PAPI system with a new LED PAPI-2 on both runway ends to enhance approach safety.
