Happy Saturday! We got lucky this afternoon with two different types of Canada Steamship Lines freighters in the Soo Locks. In the far lock (Poe Lock) heading upbound to Thunder Bay is the CSL St. Laurent and in the near lock (MacArthur Lock) is the CSL Frontenac heading downbound to Port Colborne. Which style of freighter do you like best? Pilot house in front like the Frontenac or pilot house in the back like the St. Laurent?

Happy Freighter Friday! Today we have the (now Algoma-owned) Saginaw.

Built in 1953 by Manitowoc Shipbuilding as the John J. Boland, she is one of the oldest active bulk carriers on the Great Lakes.

The John J. Boland was renamed the Saginaw on November 20, 1999.

Acquired by Algoma in early 2026 following their buyout of Lower Lakes Towing. The freighter measures 639 feet in length, has a 72-foot beam, and holds a capacity of 20,200 tons.
