🚛 ✨ Minimum DOT Pre-Trip Inspection Requirements
Before hitting the road, every truck driver knows that safety comes first! A proper pre-trip inspection isn’t just a requirement by the DOT (Department of Transportation) – it’s also a critical step in ensuring smooth and safe journeys. Here’s a quick breakdown of the essentials:
✔️Vehicle Overview
Inspect the overall condition of your truck and trailer. Look for any visible damages or leaks.
✔️Lights & Reflectors
Check that all lights (headlights, brake lights, turn signals) and reflectors are functioning properly and visible.
✔️Brakes
Ensure the air brakes are operating correctly, and inspect for any leaks or worn brake pads.
✔️Tires & Wheels
Check for proper inflation, tread depth, and any signs of damage or wear. Don’t forget to inspect the lug nuts!
✔️Steering Mechanism
Test the steering system for responsiveness and any signs of excessive play.
✔️Fluid Levels
Verify that oil, coolant, and windshield washer levels are sufficient for your trip.
✔️Mirrors & Windshield
Ensure mirrors are clean and positioned correctly. Look for any cracks or chips in the windshield that could obstruct your view.
✔️Emergency Equipment
Confirm the presence of essentials like a fire extinguisher, warning triangles, and spare fuses.
✔️Trailer Coupling
Inspect the connection between your truck and trailer to ensure it’s secure and in proper working order.
