If you’re attending the Air Link Education Conference on Oct. 17, consider donating needed blood during the onsite blood drive from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donate blood while you listen to the topics being presented – it’s a win-win. Plus, you’ll get a really cool Air Link/West Nebraska Blood Center t-shirt just for your donation!
P.S. Even if you aren’t attending the conference, we’d love for you to stop in and donate!
Tips for a good donation:
•Donors must have a photo ID with them to donate
•No antibiotics in the previous 48 hours
•No new body piercings within the last three months
•Tattoos acceptable as long as received in the state of Nebraska
•Ear piercing acceptable if done by gun method and new earrings applied
•Age 16 with parental consent, 17+ without consent
•Weigh 115 pounds or more
•Most medications, including Plavix, are fine – just no blood thinners
•Get a good night’s sleep the night before
•Have a good meal before you donate, including iron-rich foods (red meat, fish, poultry, liver, beans, iron-fortifiedcereals, raisins, prunes) – avoid fatty foods since tests for infection done on all donated blood can be affected byfatty materials that appear in your blood for several hours after ingesting
•Drink plenty of fluids for three days before donation (at least 32 ounces of water or juice)
•Wear clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow
•Show the team any “good veins” that have been used successfully in the past
•Relax
•Take time to enjoy a snack and a drink in the refreshment area immediately after donating
•Most importantly, enjoy the good feeling that comes with knowing that you may have saved as many as three lives!
You are welcome to walk in or reserve a donation slot ahead of time by calling West Nebraska Blood Center during business hours at 308-630-2477, or text at 308-637-2337.
