Every quarter, Jager conducts a Quarterly Business Review with our clients.

The process is straightforward: review shipping costs, volumes, service types, frequencies, and trends—and investigate anything that doesn't look right.

For example: Why did costs nearly double from one month to the next?

Sometimes the answer is obvious:

Complex supply chains rarely have a single obvious solution.

We recently met with the co-founder of a luxury fashion brand managing shipments between multiple vendors in Italy, U.S. warehouses, and return locations.

The challenges included:
• An underperforming Netherlands warehouse with operational inefficiencies and slow processing.
• Returns moving from multiple U.S. locations to different Italian vendors.

• An urgent need for better visibility into timelines and costs while shipments continued to move.

We evaluated three potential approaches:
✅ Solution one: consolidate goods from Italy directly to the U.S. warehouse for repacking and distribution.
✅ Solution two: route goods through the Netherlands for repacking before U.S. distribution.

✅ Solution three: have the U.S. warehouse hold goods until sufficient volume is available, then determine the most efficient distribution method.

There isn't always one "right" logistics solution. The right answer depends on the company's volumes, timelines, costs, infrastructure, and priorities.

That's why we call what we do shipping solutions.

Fuel surcharges are a key component of most carrier agreements. While they are tied to fuel prices, the relationship isn't always as straightforward as it may appear.

They can increase quickly when fuel prices rise, but reductions don't necessarily happen at the same pace.

For example, in April, UPS restructured its Ground fuel surcharge index, moving the point at which price ranges begin to widen from $3.55 per gallon to $4.45.

At current fuel prices, the difference may not be immediately visible.

The impact becomes more apparent as prices decline.

Below approximately $4.35 per gallon, the new table declines more slowly than the previous one. At $3.72—a price seen frequently during 2025—shippers can pay up to 1.50% more on Ground than they would have under the previous schedule.

The broader lesson is important:
Fuel surcharge increases can happen quickly. Reductions may take longer to reach the shipper.
