People love to tell you the “right” way to travel with kids.

Too young.
Too crowded.
Wrong time.
Too expensive.

Good thing we didn’t listen. Because I don’t actually care if my kids remember every specific trip.

What matters more is what those experiences gave them.

Now they can navigate airports, order food in another country, adapt when plans change, and feel comfortable exploring places outside their routine — better than a lot of adults I know.

Travel planted confidence, independence, curiosity, and capability long before they could fully appreciate the destination itself.

And honestly? That’s the part that mattered most all along.

Follow for realistic family travel that builds more than memories.

Summer travel season means packed airports, crowded attractions, busy cruise ports, train stations, theme parks… and more opportunities to get separated for a moment.

One of the best decisions we ever made was teaching our kids exactly what to do before they ever needed it.

And honestly?
This applies just as much to malls, concerts, sporting events, and everyday life as it does travel.

A few things we always practice:
• Stay where you are
• Find a uniformed employee or someone behind a counter
• Use my actual name instead of yelling “mom”
• Memorize phone numbers
• Stay calm — we will find each other

This reel reached millions of people the first time I shared it, which tells me a lot of parents want practical safety conversations without fear or anxiety attached to them.

Save this before your summer trips 🤍

Travel was never really the goal for our kids. And honestly, I think some parents get that part backwards.

Yes, I want my kids to see the world. I want them to experience beautiful places, different cultures, amazing food, and unforgettable trips.

But what I really hope they gain from all of this is something much bigger.

Confidence.
Adaptability.
Curiosity.
Problem-solving.
The belief that they’re capable of figuring things out — even when things feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable.

Because every trip teaches them something:
• how to navigate unfamiliar places
• how to communicate with different people
• how to be flexible when plans change
• how to step outside their comfort zone

Travel just happens to be the tool we use to practice those things together.

If one day they create a life that includes travel too? Amazing.

But my real goal is raising kids who believe they’re capable of building a life they genuinely love — whatever that looks like for them.
