Runway Closure Update
In an effort to keep everyone informed, I wanted to share the latest information regarding the upcoming runway closure. Please keep in mind that the information below is preliminary and subject to change, but it should help everyone begin planning.
The contractor has advised me that I should receive a detailed project schedule within the next 14 days. As soon as I receive it, I will share it with everyone.
At this point, work is expected to begin sometime between the last week of September and the first week of October. The entire project is anticipated to take no more than 75 days to complete.
The planned sequence of work is:
• Runway closure
• Tack coat application
• Leveling course
• Final asphalt paving
• Stub tie-ins
During the stub tie-in phase, the entire airport will be closed, including the taxiway. I have been told this full closure should last no more than four days.
Once that work is complete, the taxiway is expected to reopen for airport operations. (Please don't ask me to define exactly what "operations" means- just yet—we're still working through those details.)
Several additional phases of work will continue after the paving is completed. Many of these activities are planned to occur simultaneously to minimize the overall impact of the project. These include:
• Placing and grading dirt along the pavement edges to eliminate or minimize to standards, the drop-off at the shoulders.
• Raising and adjusting the airfield lighting.
• Allowing the required 30-day asphalt curing period before permanent pavement markings can be installed.
Because of the required curing period, the airport will need to close a second time for a few days so the permanent striping can be completed.
The good news is that the contractor appears to be very organized and has indicated that the actual paving portion of the project should take approximately 15 days. Once the paving is complete and it is safe to do so, we expect to resume normal airport operations for the most part while the remaining work is completed.
Possibly at the same time or soon thereafter, there will be some work done on the north part of Bravo and a new road put connecting the south east corner to the new hangar construction area where Edmond’s Aviation is located.
To summarize I feel like we will be in good shape for sure by the end of October.
I appreciate everyone's patience and understanding during this project. I will continue providing updates as more information becomes available, and I will share the contractor's official schedule as soon as I receive it.
Thank You
Roger Pearson
