Back to School: Sharing the Road Safely

As students return to school, our roads become busier with school buses, families, cyclists and pedestrians.

Professional drivers understand that safe driving requires extra time, space and attention—especially around school zones and bus stops.

A few important reminders for everyone sharing the road:

🚌 Be prepared for school buses to make frequent stops
🚸 Reduce your speed and watch carefully around school zones and crossings
🚲 Give cyclists and pedestrians plenty of space
🌧️ Increase your following distance during rain, fog or reduced visibility
📵 Eliminate distractions and keep your attention on the road

Whether you’re driving a passenger vehicle or a tractor-trailer, safety is a shared responsibility.

Let’s work together to help everyone begin the school year safely.

🚛 Every new role comes with a learning curve—and we believe employees should be supported through it.

At Woodcock Transportation Group, every new employee receives paid, on-the-job training tailored to their role, previous experience and individual development needs. The program may continue for up to six weeks, ensuring each employee has the time, guidance and resources needed to succeed.

Every new team member is assigned a trainer or mentor who provides practical, role-specific support. Depending on the position, training may include:

🔹 Company systems and procedures
🔹 Equipment and technology
🔹 Safety and compliance requirements
🔹 Customer and freight-handling procedures
🔹 Practical, hands-on experience
🔹 Ongoing coaching and feedback

Before working independently, employees complete a final assessment to confirm they are prepared and confident in their responsibilities.

Because experience is valuable—but taking the time to set people up for success is the Woodcock Way.

A little summer BBQ with the WTG team! ☀️🌭

Earlier this month, members of our team took a break from the workday to enjoy some good food and time together.

From firing up the BBQ to packing the plates, it was a simple afternoon filled with good food, conversation and team spirit.

It’s moments like these that bring our people together and make WTG feel like more than just a workplace.

Safety starts before the wheels begin turning.

A recent commercial vehicle enforcement initiative in eastern Ontario placed 11 of 29 inspected trucks out of service. Nearly half of the charges involved registration, daily inspections and vehicle maintenance.

It’s an important reminder that every detail matters:

🔹 Complete thorough inspections
🔹 Keep documentation current
🔹 Report concerns promptly
🔹 Never overlook a potential defect

Preparation helps protect drivers, equipment, freight and everyone sharing the road.

At Woodcock Transportation Group, we believe safety is a shared responsibility—every trip, every load and every day.

A Major Milestone for Cross-Border Transportation

Today marks the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a significant investment in the future of Canada–U.S. trade. Connecting Windsor, Ontario directly to Detroit, Michigan, the new crossing is designed to improve freight efficiency with dedicated highway connections, modern customs facilities, and increased border capacity. Artificial intelligence is transforming the transportation industry—but successful adoption takes more than just new technology.

At Woodcock Transportation Group, we believe it’s important to carefully evaluate any new technology or way of working before implementing it, and AI is no exception.

We enjoyed reading this recent Truck News article, which shares five practical recommendations from the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) for fleets considering AI—from protecting data and assigning clear ownership to ensuring people remain involved in critical decisions.

It’s a thoughtful reminder that the best innovations are backed by strong planning and informed decision-making.

Ontario is taking another step toward strengthening standards in the trucking industry.

As highlighted in a recent Truck News article, the province is warning non-compliant truck driving schools that enforcement action will begin after July 31 if they fail to meet updated training requirements. The goal is to ensure aspiring commercial drivers receive the education and preparation needed to operate safely and professionally.

High-quality driver training is fundamental to a safe and reliable transportation industry, and initiatives like this help reinforce the importance of maintaining consistent standards across the sector.

At Woodcock Transportation Group, we hire drivers who have already earned their AZ licence and believe ongoing training and professional development remain an important part of every driver’s career.
