With each new wave of travelers comes a new wave of dis and misinformation.

I'd like to clear this up from a Small Businesses point of view.

Visit Amarillo released these coin albums in 2023 for stops along Texas. Of course they focused their attention on the big stops often highlighted but in doing so they trusted the distribution of these albums to hired help and employees of the cities themselves. Through the telephone game a lot of the information was lost.

1. The coins are free ONLY with a past purchase of an album.
2. The album comes with a stamp slip that is stamped at each of the 9 coin stops.
3. There's a QR code that tells you where you can collect your coins EXCEPT small stores like ours for some reason??
4. Only 1000 albums exist.

So at first, the album didn't have the stamp slips and employees of all of our favorite Route 66 stops were just handing coins out to anyone that asked. They simply didn't know any better. It's not their fault and I'm not placing blame with them. These are just the facts.

That's right, there are people out there with coins they shouldn't have meaning inevitably there will be albums that will have open spots for coins that belong to album purchasers they can't get coins for.

It's not a problem yet but math is math and it's going to happen unless they've already stocked up on an unknown number of surplus coins because we have no way to know how many got handed out without albums being purchased first.

If you are one of those that happens to be unfortunate enough to get an album and find that specific coins are no longer available contact Visit Amarillo and hold them accountable because you should get everything you paid for.

Also, if you have coins and didn't buy the album, know that you were supposed to, and while it's not your fault someone gave you the coins for free, I'd encourage you to make it right and either return the coins or buy an album. Otherwise you're taking something that rightfully belongs to someone else.

It's not your fault but these are the facts.

At MMM we have the albums and the Shamrock coin for anyone interested.

Stop in, say hi, slow down, enjoy the journey. You never know where you might find yourself.

Last week I saw a post on social media from another drive in theater in Illinois that really resonated with me and I wanted to share a slightly amended version with you all. Please don't be offended by the message, we know so many of you are regular supporters and have kept us here for the past 77 years. We just want to highlight some of the reality of the drive-in theater business and what you can do to help make sure we're here for years to come!

First of all, yes Skyview is listed for sale. The potential buyers are people who honor the 77 year legacy of Skyview and want it to continue. I am closer to 80 years old than I am to 75 and want to spend more time with my family. Skyview will be here even if I am not.

Drive-ins do not survive on memories; they survive on attendance and their food and drink sales. One of the most common misconceptions people tell themselves about a local Drive-In is:

“They must be doing fine.”

“They’re probably packed every weekend.”

“They’ll always be there.”

Unfortunately, that is not the truth. It is those thoughts that reveal why drive-ins are lost each year.

People love the memories, nostalgia, and idea of drive-in movies.
They even love saying they grew up going there, had a first kiss under the stars, or enjoyed a show with friends and families sharing the experience with new generations.

Unfortunately, these memories and ideas do not keep the gates open. The love is why drive-ins still exist, but the actions are needed to keep them there.
Attendance, awareness and support is what allows a drive-in to be sustainable.

A drive-in does not survive because people remember it. It survives because people show up week after week to see movies, purchase snacks and share this unique experience with new people as often as possible. Reality is, people can only get to the drive-in once or twice a year for most. Heck, many can't tell you when they last went without saying 'it's been years'.

Awareness that the drive-in is here, available to attend for a large variety of events and movies, and your word-of-mouth recommendations truly drive our survival. Because every car, ticket, popcorn/food sale matters.

Every single night matters in the equation to keep a drive-in open.

When a drive-in closes, the same words always come too late:
“We were meaning to go.” "I'd go if I could just find the time."
“We thought they were doing okay.” “We didn’t know.” and the one we hear so often it hurts: "I wish I would have known about this place/movie/event sooner"

Whether you go this weekend, plan to come later for something fun, or simply tell your coworkers, friends and family members that we still exist; you will absolutely make a difference for the drive-ins that are open in 2026.

So, since you still have a local drive-in to enjoy, please do not wait for “sometime.” Go now or plan a trip soon. Take the kids. Take the grandkids. Take your husband. Take your wife. Take a friend. Buy the popcorn & movie treats. Have dinner at the drive-in. Sit under the stars and enjoy a respite from the digital world we all live in with its constant alerts and notifications. And be a part of keeping that screen alive and the drive-in experience available for others to enjoy in the future.

Because the Drive-In is not just a movie theater, it's a tradition passed down for decades and generations with countless stories, memories and moments that define a part of our lives. It's living history that is still available for you to enjoy thanks to you, the people that love drive-in movies and the tenacity of hundreds of drive-in owners and operators around the world.

Once the screen goes dark, it is not easily brought back. The Skyview Drive In is proud to be one of the last 270 drive-ins open in the United States and to be voted the Number 1 drive in theater in the country for 2024, 2025 and the 5th best in 2026.

We will have many great family movies coming up over the next month and a half and we are going to make them special. Next Friday, we open Toy Story 5 and Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jesse will be there to mingle with the kids and for pictures; we will have Pets Night on June 26 & 27 and the Humane Society will be here with adoptable pets; on July 1 we open Minions and Monsters and one of the Minions, Stuart, will be here on July 1, 2 & 3; Moana will open on July 10 and on the 11, we will have Hula dancers for you to enjoy; The Odyssey will open on July 17 and we will have a Cyclops mingling with the crowd; and at the end of the month Spiderman will be here for his new movie.

We work hard to spread awareness every single day! We also go above and beyond showing movies because we care about you, your experience and keeping this part of history alive. It's not easy, but it's worth it and all for you, our supporters!

Not later, but now.
It's an investment in history you won't regret.
THANK YOU!

This is a real, hot off the press, authentic Texas Historic Route 66 sign.

Just today I saw this sign on eBay for $675 along with completely wrong counterfeit signs for $250.

If you're looking for an actual authentic Historic Route 66 Texas sign please don't spend $675, please don't fall for the counterfeit signs.

With it being the centennial year there's going to be a lot of this going around. While the market is roaring for Route 66 stuff, people are in too much of a hurry to blow big money to get fake stuff that benefits no one.

When you buy an authentic Texas sign (from one of us on 66) you're directly contributing to replenishing and maintaining Route 66 signs across Tx. BIG thanks to the Texas Old Route 66 Association for getting that initiative started in Austin but, fun fact: the agreement that was made was that the Texas Old Route 66 Association is now financially responsible for any future signage across the state. This means every time you buy a counterfeit sign you're not only throwing your own money away but you're also feeding money away from the cause of keeping 66 alive.

We WANT you to have an authentic sign, we want you to have it at a fair price, we ALSO want to continue having the funds to keep our brand new signs across Tx in place for another 100 years and we want YOU to have that added benefit of being able to look at a sign hanging on the Mother Road and think to yourself "I helped pay for that".

If you happen to WANT an actual authentic real as it gets Route 66 sign from Texas PLEASE get in touch with us and we can steer you straight.

We really are here to help you and we'd love to help you help Route 66!!!

Thanks everyone.
