Glass Float Addict

Glass Float Addict All Japanese glass floats were personally found on the shores of Japan and were used with fishing ne After that it has been non-stop.

My addiction to these floats started in the Spring of 2017 when I found my first float on a beach in Japan. I have traveled all over Japan to hunt for these beautiful and interesting floats. I only collect authentic "working" floats that have been used in industry. These floats have been in the ocean currents for years to decades before strong weather disturbance knocks them out of circulation and

onto shore. It never gets old when I come across these floats on the beach. I am a passionate collector have quite a few floats ranging from an inch in diameter to 15 inches in diameter. I have created this page to reduce my inventory as my hobby has grown drastically in size. I can also post listings upon request for other sizes and color. Please send me an email or message. Happy looking and please let me know if you are interested.

This is how much of a nerd I am with glass floats... I immediately spotted them while watching the new Road House. I counted 4 in the 1st picture and 7 in the 2nd.

Whenever I explain to someone how Japanese glass floats were made, it is most likely perceived in a way that doesn't convey how labor intensive the manufacturing process really was.

Imagaine if you were one of these workers and profusely sweating and dirty because you were near blazing hot fire furnaces casting, collecting melted glass, blowing, placing the seal button and recasting again before you had to pack, lift, and ship them to the fishermen who ordered them for their catch. Now to imagaine you were doing this all day and the inherent safety risks that went into having a job like this.

Hopefully, these pictures from Amos Wood's book Beachcombing for Japanese Floats helps illustrates a little of what actually went into producing these floating treasure.

This is what I miss the most about float hunting... the long drives to the coastlines, waking up at 5am for 12+ hour days of beach combing, and then sleeping overnight at the next site, then repeat. I filmed this during the early part of my obsession in Japan and it brought back some fond memories.

For those who received float from me, this is how your floats were found while I was in Japan. The good ol' fashion way.

Once in a while I would get lucky and find a treasure and a rare float within my collection that I was not aware of. This is a 3" float with a glass spindle. Spindles are formed when molten glass has not had a chance to cool and drips during the glass blowing process. This one is almost directly in the middle. This is truly a treat.
