That pink wedge covering the northeast third of Minnesota is the oldest ground in the state, and everything up there follows from it.
The Canadian Shield is the exposed core of the North American continent. In Minnesota it runs from the Boundary Waters and Rainy River country southeast through the Iron Range and down to Duluth, then along the North Shore to Canada.
The rock is Precambrian and some of it is genuinely ancient. The Morton Gneiss in the Minnesota River valley, an outlier of the same basement rock, dates to around 3.5 billion years, among the oldest exposed rock on Earth. The Ely Greenstone in the Vermilion district runs about 2.7 billion. The Duluth Complex and the North Shore basalts came from the Midcontinent Rift about 1.1 billion years ago, when the continent started tearing apart and flooded the region with lava.
That basalt is why Split Rock, Palisade Head and Gooseberry look the way they do.
The iron is the other consequence. Banded iron formation laid down roughly two billion years ago in ancient seas became the Mesabi, Vermilion and Cuyuna ranges. That ore built American steel, and it is why Hibbing, Virginia, Eveleth and Two Harbors exist.
The Shield also explains the lakes. Glaciers scraped this hard rock repeatedly and left almost no soil, gouging out thousands of basins that filled with water. The Boundary Waters is what happens when ice meets granite.
Thin acidic soil means poor farming, which is why the northeast stayed forested while the southern two thirds became cropland. Pine, spruce, birch and aspen instead of corn and soybeans.
The line on that map is the real boundary in Minnesota.
