Hangar 13 Renewal – Community-Led Restoration

Hangar 13 sat vacant for years after hurricane-related water damage made the space unusable. Demolition was considered, but the cost to tear down the 60-year-old building far exceeded available funding and would have left the City with no replacement facility.
Instead, the Airport pursued a community-driven solution. Nearly all labor supporting this restoration is being provided by volunteers, nonprofit partners, parents, and donated professional expertise.
The City’s role has been limited to purchasing basic materials needed to make the building safe and usable.
This approach preserves an existing public asset, supports aviation youth programs, and returns unused hangar space to service—without the cost of new construction.
