Built by Wärtsilä in Finland, the RTA96-C is a two-stroke turbocharged diesel engine designed to power the world’s largest container ships, such as the Emma Maersk. This engineering marvel stands over four stories high, measures 89 feet in length, and weighs more than 2,300 tons — heavier than a fully loaded Boeing 747.
Each of its 14 cylinders displaces 1,820 liters — that’s more than a typical car engine’s total displacement multiplied by 100. It consumes about 1,660 gallons of fuel per hour, but thanks to its slow-speed efficiency, it can move enormous vessels carrying over 20,000 shipping containers across oceans.
The engine produces 107,390 horsepower and 5.6 million Newton-meters of torque, allowing these colossal ships to travel at steady speeds for weeks. Despite its immense power, it’s built for efficiency — using heavy fuel oil and operating at low RPMs to maximize fuel economy and reduce emissions.
