Barbees' Backyard Honey

Barbees' Backyard Honey Barbees' Backyard Honey. Local natural organic honey. Produced in small batches every fall extracted from our backyard bee hive.

2017 was a lackluster year for for Barbee's Backyard Honey. The prominent fires and smokey air may have effected the bee's activities, and when we broke down the hive last September there was not an abundance of honey.

We made the decision to allow thees bees to keep all of their honey over the winter and would evaluate in the spring.

Good news is the hive survived the winter, and Barbee's is back for 2018. Hopeful the fire season isn't as bad as the past years.

Barb already got stung today. Maybe she'll remember to wear her Carrhart covers next time.

We have been watching the summer production, and letting the bees do their thing.

Tomorrow we will be 'going in' and collecting the full frames of comb for extraction later.

One of us will likely get stung. The little girls find a way, they somehow do. It just part of the deal.

Tomorrow night we'll have a weight estimation of how much honey comb can be extracted.

After that, we'll arrange with our extractor to get the honey from the comb.

It's been a busy spring. Summer is upon us and the colony appears to be strong and healthy.

We added a third full size box of frames last week as we expect the size of the colony to grow from ten thousand to over sixty thousand by late summer.

Meanwhile, our cherry tree is just about ready for picking.

Today is bee day! Picked up our package of 10,000 from Tate's Honey Farm and brought them home to Barbees' Backyard. Our son helped with putting them into the hive boxes. The bees were quite excited to move in and get to work.

We had quite a lot of honey for them from the previous year's colony, they'll survive on the stores while they build out comb and gather the early spring nectar.

Barbee's Backyard Honey had a bit of a setback over the winter. We checked our hive box in early March and found it quite still and silent. The queen may have died or the winter was just too rough on them.

We have a new queen and 10,000 anxious sisters which we'll be receiving in about a week.

I'll be posting pictures of their arrival and introduction into the hive boxes.

Barb Scriven working the hive today.
Added a couple deep frame boxes to give more living space, and the smaller 'super' frames to build up the honey stores.
They weren't too put off by our presence, not a lot of honey to guard yet.

Our 10,000 bees plus one anxious queen arrived Saturday afternoon. Barb introduced them into their new home; however, they skipped the housewarming and went straight to work.
