Why Managing Jet Lag Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

People often ask me how I mange jet lag, especially when they're preparing for an 8-, 10-, or even 12-hour flight to Europe.

For me, managing jet lag doesn't begin when the cabin door closes or after I land. It begins with the planning and preparation that happen before I even get to the airport.

Let's say I'm taking a direct flight from Seattle to Rome. I'm talking about the kind of overnight flight where you leave in the evening and don't land until sometime the following afternoon.

A day or two before I leave, if my schedule allows, I'll start nudging my sleep a little closer to my destination's time. I don't obsess over it, but every little bit helps.

When travel day arrives, I'm already thinking about hydration, what I'm eating, and making sure I have the things that make a long flight more comfortable. That's why I wear essentially the same outfit every travel day and carry the same comfort items.

Once I'm on the plane, I try to get some sleep, but I don't want to sleep the entire flight. My goal is to arrive rested enough to enjoy the afternoon, but still tired enough to fall asleep at a normal hour that evening.

After I land in Rome, I don't put pressure on myself to see everything. I freshen up, drop my bags, get outside, enjoy a good meal, and let my body settle into its new surroundings. By the next morning, I'm usually ready to start exploring.

None of those things magically eliminates jet lag, but together they make an 8-, 10-, or 12-hour flight feel a lot easier to deal with.

In my experience, it's a series of small decisions before, during, and after the flight that make the biggest difference. Your first day in Europe doesn't have to be your busiest day to be a great one.

"Still, I expect you in action first thing in the morning. None of this jet lag bu****it." — Upgraded, 2024

✈️ Planning a trip to Europe? Big changes are officially on the horizon.

The EU has locked in the timeline for ETIAS (the European Travel Information and Authorisation System). If you hold a passport from a visa-exempt country (like the US, Canada, UK, or Australia), here is what you need to know:

🗓️ The Timeline: ETIAS is officially scheduled to go live in the last quarter of 2026.
⏳ The Grace Period: Don't panic just yet! There will be a 12-month transitional and grace period after launch to help travelers adjust without being turned away at the border.
💶 The Cost: It will cost €20 for adults, but it's completely free for anyone under 18 or over 70.
⏳ Validity: Once approved, your ETIAS is good for 3 years (or until your passport expires) for short stays up to 90 days.

⚠️ IMPORTANT WARNING: ⚠️
As the launch approaches, dozens of unofficial, lookalike websites are popping up. They will try to charge you massive "processing fees" or steal your data. When applications open, ONLY use the official European Union website ending in.

✈️ Traveling to Europe soon? The rules just changed—and it’s a MASSIVE win for your wallet. 💰👇

EU261 Air Passenger Rights: Comprehensive Guide (2026 Update)

If you’ve ever had a flight delayed, canceled, or been hit with a ridiculous airline policy, you need to know about EU261.

The European Union has some of the strongest passenger protection laws in the world, and thanks to a massive 2026 update, airlines are being held tighter to the fire than ever before.

Swipe through the slides to see exactly what you are entitled to, but here are the major game-changers regular travelers need to know right now:

💥 The 3-Hour Self-Rerouting Rule: If your flight is canceled and the airline doesn't find you an alternative within 3 hours, you can book your own flight/train and force them to reimburse you (up to 400% of the original ticket price!).

🚫 No More "No-Show" Penalties: Missed or skipped your outbound flight? Airlines can no longer cancel your return journey or charge you a penalty fee.

⏱️ Strict 30-Day Resolution: No more waiting months for a response. Airlines now legally have 30 days to pay out your claim or give a formal refusal.

💵 Up to €600 ($695) Cash Payouts: If your flight arrives 3+ hours late or is canceled last minute, you could be owed cash—and yes, this applies to U.S. citizens too!

Check out the slides to save for your next trip, and share this with anyone heading across the pond this year! 🌍

One of the biggest travel mistakes I see has nothing to do with packing, passports, or picking the right hotel. 🧳❌

It's treating travel day like something to "survive."

Travel days are energy management days.

Your vacation doesn't start when you arrive - it starts the moment you leave home. 🏡✨

That means:
🥞 Eat breakfast.
💧 Drink water.
👟 Wear comfortable clothes.
🎒 Don't overload yourself with bags.
🚶‍♂️ Get up and walk during long flights.
⏰ Build in enough time so you're not sprinting through the airport.

Yes, the 5:00 a.m. flight might save you $60. 💸

But if it means waking up at 2:00 a.m., arriving completely exhausted, and losing your entire first day in Rome, Prague, or Paris...did you really save anything? 🥱

Experienced travelers know that energy is just as valuable as money. 🔋🤝💰

Spend both wisely, and you'll enjoy so much more of the trip you worked so hard to take. 🙏✈️

🏛️ PLANNING A TRIP TO THE ROMAN COLOSSEUM? READ THIS BEFORE BOOKING! 🚨

If you’ve been browsing travel groups lately, you’ve probably noticed a massive flurry of frantic posts about last-minute cancellations and chaotic experiences with third-party apps like GetYourGuide and Viator.

If you're wondering what the heck is going on—or why people are showing up for $300 tours only to be turned away at the gates by security—here is the ultimate, no-nonsense breakdown of the aggressive ticketing crackdown happening in Rome right now.

🛑 Why are third-party tours being canceled and denied?

The Parco Archeologico del Colosseo is aggressively fighting back against automated bots, scalpers, and unauthorized operators who hoard tickets and resell them at massive markups.

Because of this, strict rules are in place that are completely disrupting secondary booking platforms:

*Strictly "Nominative" Tickets: Every single ticket must now have your exact legal first and last name printed on it. Staff cross-reference your ticket with your physical passport or photo ID at the gate. No match = zero entry.

*Virtually Zero Name Changes: As of May 2026, you can no longer freely change names on tickets. Alterations require a formal email request, must be done at least 7 days in advance, and are only approved for major typos or extreme emergencies. This completely stops agencies from hoardin "blank" tickets to assign later.

*The "Accredited Partners" Trap: The Colosseum enforces a strict list of officially approved local operators. Because marketplaces like GetYourGuide host hundreds of independent local companies, it’s easy to accidentally book a tour run by an 'unaccredited' operator. If you do, their guides are barred from entering, turning your guided tour into a self-guided ticket at the last second.

🚨 Real Example: The $300 Underground Nightmare

Just this week, a group of travelers booked a premium "Full Experience" Underground tour on GetYourGuide through a licensed, accredited vendor on the official list.

Even booking with an accredited name didn't save them. Because the operator couldn't secure the highly restricted official 'group' tickets for the underground, they pulled a bait-and-switch. They secretly purchased individual tickets from an unaccredited third-party source, handed them to the guests, and told them: "Put your radios away, go check in with security individually, and we'll meet you on the inside."

The result? Gate security spotted the fake out instantly. The individual papers lacked the visitors' names and were traced to an unauthorized reseller. The entire group was rejected on the spot and handed an official notice citing "Article 3, Paragraph 6" of the park regulations, which mandates immediate denial for tickets bought via unauthorized intermediaries.

💰 Knowing Your Ticket Options (Official vs. Third-Party)

If you manage to buy tickets directly from the official portal (ticketing.colosseo.it), you will save a fortune compared to third-party markups. Here is how the main official ticket tiers break down: *as of today, 27 June 2026

**Standard Ticket (24h Pass) | Colosseum Levels 1 & 2, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. | €18.00

**Full Experience Arena (48h Pass) | Everything in Standard + stepping out onto the Arena Floorwhere the gladiators fought. | €24.00

**Full Experience Underground (48h Pass) | Everything in Standard + Arena Floor + a guided tour of the Underground Hypogeum chambers. | €24.00

*Note: Third-party tours for these exact same experiences often start anywhere from €100 to over €280 because they bundle in the guide fee and their own profit margins.

💡 How to Safeguard Your Rome Trip:

1. Book Direct First (Safest & Cheapest): Go to ticketing.colosseo.it. General admission releases 30 days in advance, while special experiences like the Arena or Night Tours drop in batches 7 days in advance. Set an alarm and be on the site the exact second they go on sale.

2. Watch for "Red Flags" on Third-Party Tours: If you have to use a platform like GetYourGuide, scroll to the bottom to check the Activity Provider. If your guide ever tells you to hide your headsets, act like independent travelers, or pass through security alone to "meet inside," your operator is cutting corners. Your tickets are at high risk of being confiscated.

3. Demand Your Name Confirmation: If a third-party seller does not immediately ask for the exact passport names of everyone in your group the moment you book, they don't actually hold your tickets yet.

Thankfully, the travelers turned away this week are getting fully refunded by GetYourGuide, but a refund won't bring back a missed bucket-list experience. Do your homework before you fly!

My Personal Travel System: Reducing Friction Before Every Trip ✈️

One of the most common questions my clients ask me is how to handle the stress of short-notice travel.

The answer is simple: I don't prepare quickly. I prepare continuously.

Over the years, I've built a personal travel system designed to reduce friction before I ever leave home. Most of what I do isn't packing—it's verifying that systems I've already built are ready to go.

Travel will always have uncertainty. Flights get delayed. Weather changes. But while I can't control the airlines, I can control my own preparation.

Travel isn't stressful because of the big things. It's stressful because of dozens of little points of friction. Remove enough of those, and you leave room to enjoy the journey.

Four principles guide almost everything I do:
🔹 Standardize – If something works well, stop reinventing it.
🔹 Reduce friction – Solve problems at home, not at the baggage claim.
🔹 Build redundancy – Backup payments, backup power, backup connectivity.
🔹 Plan backward – Start from the departure gate and work backward to build realistic time buffers.

The result? Travel days become calmer, more predictable, and actually enjoyable.

This is the first post in a new series where I'll walk through every part of my personal travel system—from my electronics kit and travel-day uniform to my backward planning and airport strategy.

And yes...the last thing I pack before I walk out the front door isn't something you can buy. It's patience. 🧘‍♂️

See you in the next post.

Plan, Pack, Go!

🐈 P.S. Yes, that's an orange blanket under Bailee. It's there to remind me there's a cat on the suitcase and to keep cat hair from becoming an unintended travel companion!
