Detroit, Michigan: The Comeback City You Didn't Know You Needed
Detroit doesn't get nearly enough credit as a travel destination β and that's exactly why you should go before everyone else figures it out.
Whether you're a foodie, a music lover, a history buff, or just someone looking for a great weekend road trip, Detroit delivers in a way that genuinely surprises people. Here's what's worth your time.
---
What to Do
Motown Museum β Standing inside the actual studio where Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross recorded is one of those experiences that stays with you. Book ahead, it sells out.
Detroit Institute of Arts β One of the best art museums in the country, full stop. The Diego Rivera murals inside are breathtaking.
Eastern Market β Show up on a Saturday morning. Grab breakfast, browse local vendors, and soak in the energy. Pure Detroit.
Corktown & Midtown β Walk these neighborhoods, pop into independent shops, grab a drink. The city's creative soul lives here.
Belle Isle β A beautiful island park in the Detroit River with skyline views that'll make you reach for your phone every five minutes.
---
What to Eat
Don't leave without trying Detroit-style pizza (square, crispy, sauce on top β Buddy's is the original), and absolutely get a Coney dog from Lafayette or American Coney Island downtown. The debate over which is better has been going on since 1917 and we're not settling it here.

Getting Around
Detroit is a driving city β it was literally built by the auto industry. Having your own wheels makes a huge difference. You can get between neighborhoods faster, make a day trip to Ann Arbor, catch a game at Comerica Park, or cruise down Woodward Avenue (the first paved road in America, fun fact).
We always use https://bit.ly/iGlobalserveBooking to compare rental rates before any road trip β it pulls prices from all the major companies at once so you're not overpaying. Takes two minutes and has saved us money every single time.

Detroit is one of those cities that gets under your skin. Go with an open mind and give it a real chance β you won't regret it.
