Purple martins on the MOVE! Roosts LARGE ENOUGH to be seen on weather radar!
After leaving nesting colonies, purple martins gather in large flocks to socialize, feed, and rest before migrating to wintering grounds in Brazil. These flocks can be quite large, numbering in the hundreds or even thousands of birds. Martin roosts are scattered throughout North America, including a few locations in Kentucky.
One nice viewing area is Lake Reba Recreational Area in Richmond, Ky. Purple martins will likely use this area through late August.
👀 Optimal viewing times are evenings around 7:30 pm. Weather permitting, Kentucky Wild volunteers will be at Lake Reba on Saturday, August 14th to help with viewing and answer questions.
