October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and Heartland Industries is celebrating the value and talent of our employees! 🎨

We're Hiring! Are you tired of the same old grind? Are you looking to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others? We have a full-time opportunity for someone to join our team who is mission oriented, caring, and dedicated to helping others achieve their full potential. This is an entry level job working with and supervising adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a modern, clean, environmentally controlled facility. As a Production Supervisor/Team Leader (Level 1), you will be actively engaged with varied groups of individuals as they complete packaging and assembly jobs. The job requires significant time standing and moving around a production floor. Some lifting, up to 50 pounds, may be necessary. High school or equivalent degree is required. We are located in south St. Louis County in a safe, modern industrial park. The position includes a generous benefit package of health, dental, and vision insurance. Heartland Industries is a proud and very grateful recipient of funding from The Productive Living Board for St. Louis County Citizens with Developmental Disabilities (PLB). The PLB is surveying individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), their families, and community partners to help prioritize funds and better understand what services are most needed in St. Louis County. Heartland Industries was honored to welcome Dan Gier as the guest speaker at our Annual Association Meeting on September 16!

As Director of Extended Employment Sheltered Workshops for the state of Missouri, Dan is a valuable source of knowledge and guidance for workshop managers, boards and employees across the state.

During the meeting, Dan shared insights into the history of sheltered workshops in Missouri, the challenges they have faced and overcome throughout the years, and the important role they continue to play in providing employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

We’re grateful to Dan for joining us and sharing his knowledge with the Heartland community. Thank you for all you do to support workshops and the individuals they serve!

Thank you PLB for sharing Jimmy's story. It should also be said that Jimmy's time here at Heartland Industries was made possible in part because of the tremendous program and financial support provided by the PLB to organizations in St. Louis County who provide services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I'm not sure we could provide the safe, meaningful, and dignified employment that we do without your assistance. Cheers to the PLB!

Meaningful employment can be life-changing when people have the right opportunities and support. Jimmy's story is a great example of what's possible.

Before finding his place at Heartland Industries Inc., Jimmy made several attempts at working in supported employment settings. Once he found the right fit, he flourished. Over 13 years, Jimmy developed a wide range of vocational skills, including labeling, sorting, packaging, assembling, collating, boxing, and safely operating workplace equipment. Along the way, he strengthened his independence, built confidence, and learned to work as part of a team.

As Jimmy's mom shared in a letter to Heartland's staff, "Your patience and commitment helped him build self-assurance and self-respect and learning to work with others."

Jimmy and his family are beginning a new chapter as they move across the country. While he'll miss his coworkers and the staff who supported him along the way, he's taking with him years of experience and the skills he's worked hard to develop. Once he's settled into his new home, Jimmy hopes to put those skills to work by finding a new job in his community.

This Disability Pride Month, we celebrate Jimmy's accomplishments and the opportunities that help people with disabilities build meaningful careers, greater independence, and the lives they choose.
